H20i Update: Hurricane Joaquin, Skipping Out or Going?

With all of the weather-based goings-on surrounding this weekend and the planned H2Oi event near Ocean City, Maryland, we wanted to provide a few updates for our readers.

Is the Show Still Happening?
Yes. Show promoters continue to post updates to their event forum and social media channels that the show will still go on. We’ve even seen several photos from the show location Camp Whaley that confirm vendors like Volkswagen themselves and New German Performance have arrived and were setting up.

Are Vendors Canceling Out?
Yes. Some have. While VW is already there, APR announced yesterday that they would be staying back home in Alabama. That they’d have to come up through Georgia and South Carolina to get here (areas that are expected to get 12+ inches of rain today via a weather event unrelated to Joaquin) likely added to this decision. APR has announced that New German Performance will be handling all installs for them at H2Oi this year.

Unitronic also appears to have pulled out. Though H2Oi did confirm the arrival of at least one of their rigs in Maryland late yesterday, the Canadian-based tuning company posted confirmation to their website this morning that they also confirmed they’ll be pulling out of this year’s event.

What of Ocean City?
The town of Ocean City put out a press release yesterday warning of the oncoming storm. Specifically, they warned of flooding in zones A and B, particularly during high tide around noon. Heavy rain also expected could flood roads.

All of that said, the most recent weather reports we’ve seen suggest Joaquin could be taking a more easterly track than originally expected and missing most of the American East Coast with its brunt.

Ocean City did have a press conference this morning. They reiterated the flooding warnings, but also suggested that high tides will be effectively the same height or more than were experienced with Hurricane Sandy, and they expect that to continue for the next few days.

What of VWvortex?
We’re still planning to attend and cover the event. Given Unitronic pulled out after having arrived and assessed the show ground, we may dial back our actual display ambitions, but we’ll be at the event and provide coverage of the weekend.

Below are the statements from APR and Unitronic

APR Announcement
Many of you have heard we’re not attending H2Oi due to the hurricane. However, if the weather holds out, New German Performance will be attending the event stocked full of APR hardware! They will also be on location, flashing ECUs and TCUs with APR software. Please contact them for more details!

Unitronic Announcement
After waiting it out as long as possible to make a final decision regarding H20 International this weekend, and factoring in all the variables, Unitronic sincerely regrets to inform our loyal Clients, Friends, Fans, and fellow Enthusiasts we will not be at H20 International. With the uncertain path of Hurricane Joaquin, the amount of rain that has already fallen and is forecasted to fall over the course of the next few days, and the safety of our Staff, Equipment, Displays, etc, we have been forced to make this very tough decision.

For Clients who have pre-registered for Performance Software Flashes at H20 International, we will be in touch to discuss options with you personally. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and thank you very much for your understanding and support. This was a very difficult decision to make and we wish everyone a safe weekend.
