ID Crozz to Get Substantially More Range than ID.3, e-tron Share Comments In the race to be the EV leader, range is among the most important factors. And currently, European manufacturers are struggling to keep up in America. Volkswagen’s chief product marketing and strategy head, Hein Schafer, says that the ID Crozz won’t struggle in the same way. Although the ID.3’s range has not yet been tested by the EPA, you can predict that it will shrink from the 342 miles estimated in Europe. The Audi e-tron, for example, is rated at 270 miles by European testers, but at just 204 miles by the EPA. The Porsche Taycan’s range also suffered in American testing. And that’s actually one of the reasons VW USA chose to skip the ID.3, Schafer told us at the Chicago Auto Show. “I think a) the price that it would have potentially had to land in the market here; b) the size. I mean it is a really compact size,” said Schafer. “And last but not least, the battery, we didn’t feel the range got to where it needed to.” Fortunately, the ID Crozz is based on a slightly different version of the MEB platform, so it should get much more range. “Will we be on par with the top, big battery Tesla? I’m not 100% certain, we’re working on it,” said Schafer. “Will we be significantly better than ID.3? Yes.” Asked if the Crozz would outperform the e-tron, Schafer said yes. Schafer didn’t provide details on exactly what would allow the Crozz to get such improved range, but the size will certainly allow for more batteries. Schafer also revealed that Germany’s R GmbH subsidiary has been thinking about a performance version of the Crozz. “So R GmbH have some concepts,” he said. They “are definitely looking at finding ways to extract a little bit of a faster 0-60 and I’ve definitely seen some very cool body kits and design sketches of what could potentially be an ID Crozz R.” As to whether or not we will ever see an ID.3 in the US, VW’s new COO, Johan de Nysschen, says never say never. “You know, never is a very long time,” said de Nysschen. “I would imagine though that we’d get into the Tiguan segment and the Atlas segment before. But, you know, also looking at the use case for EVs.” The advantage of the MEB platform, he explained, is that it allows for more niche vehicles since the cost of the platform is amortized over a number of vehicles. Volkswagen, and indeed de Nysschen, have been much more interested in pointing out how interesting the ID Buzz is than the ID.3, though. So don’t hold your breath.
