Three Years of Free Electrify America Charging for 2021 VW ID.4 Buyers

Electrify America and Volkswagen have announced that ID.4 buyers for the 2021 model year will get free unlimited charging on the EA network, at least for the first three years they own their EeVeeDub.

It goes to buyers who purchase or lease their ID.4 electric crossover, who will get three-years unlimited free charging sessions at any of Electrify America’s more than 470 charging stations and 2,000 DC fast chargers. That includes charging levels of up to 350 kW, which is currently the fastest charging speed offered by any publicly accessible charging network. The announcement says that 96 percent of the population of the US lives within 120 miles of an Electrify America charging station.

“With a relentless commitment to driving the electric vehicle industry forward, Electrify America opened DC fast-charging stations at an accelerated pace of 1.2 per business day in 2019,” said Giovanni Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of Electrify America. “As more and more electric vehicles are introduced to the market, and consumer interest grows, we are excited to announce this agreement with Volkswagen to deliver fast and accessible charging to ID.4 customers and a new wave of EV adopters.”

And that deal will apply to even more charging stations soon. The ID.4 isn’t on the market yet, and Electrify America plans to have 800 charging stations with around 3,500 DC fast chargers by December of next year, massively increasing the network. There are some restrictions, like for ride-sharing drivers, and there are idle fees after a 10-minute grace period following a full charge, but while Tesla occasionally uses free Supercharging as a sales incentive, this would make Volkswagen the only electric automaker offering this on an ongoing basis.
