Volkswagen Details New Hardware and Software Innovations Including 10-speed DSG Share Comments Volkswagen released details of new hardware and software innovations yesterday, including new more powerful TDI powerplants, a 10-speed DSG gearbox rated for up to 550Nm (405 ft-lbs tq), and a host of other new technologies. Most notable to our readers will be the aforementioned TDI motors, featuring twin turbochargers and rated at 236hp and 268hp respectively. There is no word on torque figures just yet, but we’d guess that the new 10-speed DSG gearbox’s 500Nm limit should give a good indication of what to expect. The new motors are about more than just power figures though, as they feature increased fuel economy figures through use of an updated stop-start functionality that not only kills the engine when stationary, but also when coasting under 7 km/h (4.3 mph) and a highway speeds. Volkswagen believes that this feature will be able to greatly increase economy numbers when paired with an anticipatory driving style. When it comes to transmissions, Volkswagen will be adopting the “more is more” approach with their new 10-speed DSG box. Through using gear ratios optimized for efficiency, the transmission will help Volkswagen achieve ever-tightening standards for consumption and CO2 emissions. Upon release, the transmission will feature the most gears of any on the market to come in a car. Other noteworthy announcements from Volkswagen include an E-Glass Sunroof which blocks infared radiation, Volkswagen Car-Net- bringing online services into the car, a new Air Condition system designed to work specifically in electric cars, and Predictive Navigation which has the ability to “learn” your driving preferences.
