Volkswagen Golf GTI, Jetta GLI Nab Car And Driver ’10Best’ Honors Share Comments For the 14th straight year, a member of the Volkswagen Golf family has been named one of the ten best new cars available by Car and Driver magazine. The last time a Volkswagen Golf wasn’t named to Car and Driver magazine’s 10Best list of the best new cars on sale in America, it was 2006. George W. Bush was U.S. president, and Facebook was still a relatively unknown social network, mostly reserved for students at elite universities. Some fourteen years later, a member of the Golf family – the 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI – has been named to Car and Driver‘s 2020 10Best list, proving that as much as times change, some things never do. Joining the GTI on the latest Car and Driver 10Best list is the Volkswagen Jetta GLI – the tuned-up, sporty version of VW’s new A7 Jetta. Both cars utilize the same punchy, 228-horsepower turbocharged EA888 four-cylinder engine, paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission. A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox can be optioned in both models. “These VWs check every box and do everything well,” says Car and Driver‘s editorial staff. “They are affordable; they are efficient; they are spacious, fast, and fun. “It’s their unflinching sense of fun that makes these two so easy to love. They bring the same verve to a crosstown jaunt as they do to barreling into the braking zone.” For the first time, Car and Driver‘s 2020 10Best included cars, trucks, and utility vehicles all on the same list; previously, trucks and utilities were awarded in a separate 10Best list. Eligible vehicles for 2020 included vehicles that were all-new or significantly redesigned for 2020, and 2019 10Best winners returning to defend their titles. Only vehicles starting under $90,000 were considered. Click here for the full 2020 Car and Driver 10Best list.
