VW and Lego Build Full-Size T2 Van

Volkswagen and Lego are showing off a T2 van that’s a real brick. 400,000 bricks, that is.

This latest trend of building full-size cars out of Lego is pretty great. Bugatti has a driving Chiron, Chevy has a full-size Silverado, and now this. A full-size camper made of Lego.

Rene Hoffmeister’s kink is Lego bricks. He’s one of just 12 certified Lego model makers in the entire world. And he had just six weeks to build this full-size (including pop-top camper) VW to get it ready for the f.re.e trade show in Munich. It’s a camping and caravanning show held each year there.

While Hoffmeister and colleague Pascal Lenhard said the project started off with a click, they ran into problems down the road. Missing 20,000 transparent bricks for the T2’s windows. “Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week,” recalls Hoffmeister. “However, as they don’t exist, the only option was night shifts.”

They pulled it off, and the 5m-long, 3m high, 700 kg Volkswagen T2 was ready in time.
