WTCR Driver Benny Leuchter Talks Golf GTI Love

Volkswagen is running a series of videos about people who don’t just drive their Golf, but “live for it.” It’s called the It’s My Life series, and for part 7 the crew is talking with Benny Leuchter about his Golf VII GTI Clubsport S.

Leuchter’s day job is as a professional driver in the FIA World Touring Car Cup. There, he drives a Golf TCR. He has also set a front-drive production car record around the Nürburgring. When he’s not on track, Leuchter drives not just any Clubsport S, but number 001 of 400.

The driver says his GTI story began long ago. “My mum drove a Golf II GTI 16V, “Fire and Ice” special edition,” says Benny. “And I knew even back then that the GTI was something quite special.” “It was also clear from very early on that my first car would be a GTI,” Leuchter said.

His Clubsport S, number one, doesn’t get driven often. Just 431 km in the three years he’s had it. “It normally sits well wrapped and preserved in my garage.” It’s not Leuchter’s first GTI, that was an Mk VI that he picked up in Wolfsburg. Then immediately fitted a chip tine, suspension, and wheels.

Leuchter’s best experience with a Golf so far? “My best experience with the Golf was when I overtook all of the Porsche GT3, McLaren and other cars with flashing headlights during test runs. The ‘greats’ were vexed – I like that!”
