VW Committed to Stick Shifts Long Term, Report

Good news for anyone who likes Volkswagens and prefers to have three pedals sticking down toward the floorboards of their cars. The company is planning on keeping the stick around for the long-term, including in the next-gen GTI.

We’ll admit we were a little nervous about the Mk VIII Golf GTI getting a row your own option when the plaidest of hot hatches was revealed earlier this year. Fortunately, VW delivered, and while the excellent DSG is on the options list, the gearbox that comes standard is a standard.

And according to Autocar, that offering will continue. They spoke with Matthias Rabe, head of technical development operations with VW, about the sick stick. “Some people enjoy going back to their roots and changing gear manually, and so long as there is a demand, we will continue to offer them,” Rabe said, confirming the automaker’s commitment to manuals long-term.

While it’ll still be a few years before the next Volkswagen Golf GTI makes it to North America, knowing that it will likely arrive here with a stick makes the wait a little easier.
