Watch: The Golf R Go Round the Nurburgring Again Share Comments Early last week, we shared a video of the Golf R testing at the Nurburgring. Today we have more footage of the R rounding the ‘ring. The footage is fairly similar, so don’t expect any wild revelations, but it does show some different angles of the R looking fast. Back in April, we wrote: Well-founded rumors have the Golf R’s 2.0-liter turbo-four producing around 330 hp, or roughly 30 more than the current car. There’s reason to believe, too, that the Golf R will look a little more aggressive than this when it’s revealed. Volkswagen of America’s head of product marketing and strategy, Hein Schafer, told us in February that he has already seen the R. “Physically, the [GTI and the R] do look very different,” he said. “I’ve seen them both in the flesh, so the new Golf R looks super aggressive.” Schafer also said that he had every hope that the Spektrum color program could return for the Mk8. “It’s a hell of a mission for the Wolfsburg plant,” Schafer said. “But I think it was so successful and so well published, I’m sure that they might repeat that in the Mk8.” The current car hits 60 in under 5 seconds and makes 295 lb-ft of torque and we would anticipate that the new car will outperform the old R in both respects. It will also receive the new Golf’s infotainment systems and technology. The Golf R was reportedly meant to be unveiled at Goodwood this summer, but plans may have been delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
