Watch: The GTI TCR Run the Nurburgring in 8:04.92 Share Comments The Golf GTI TCR was first shown as a concept at Worthersee in 2018. Then VW crossed out the concept part and put the 289 hp GTI on sale in Europe. Now, Germany’s SportAuto has put the GTI TCR to the test on the Nurburgring and wouldn’t you know it, it’s pretty dang quick. It’s not the fastest GTI to ever go around the ‘Ring, but with a time of 8minutes and 4 seconds, it’s no slouch. That time puts it on par with a Lamborghini Diablo (also run by SportAuto) and an Alfa Romeo 4C, which has neither a trunk nor a frunk. The honor of fastest GTI, you’ll no doubt recall, goes to the GTI Clubsport S, which has a special Nurburgring mode, and drove around the track in 7:47, with a little help from Benny Leuchter. Leuchter is actually a common thread between these cars because his hotshoe status was earned in touring car racing—whence the TCR gets its name. Inspired by the racing Golf TCR, the GTI TCR comes with VW’s funky differential, a dual-clutch transmission, and can hit 62 mph in just 5.6 seconds.
