i just did a 16v conversion in my 86 jetta and when i first start it, it wont idle, when i pin the gas it will only rev as high as about 2,000 RPMs, then ill let off the gas and it will idle ok, not good but ok, then die after a few secs....BTW my O2 sens light is on and so is my battery light, but i dont have the alternator hooked up yet

check your belt timing and ignition timing. your alt light is on because it's not charging the battery.
