My 2016 came with this "option" that of course wasn't really optional... the thing is the velcro type stuff on the blocks completely rips the threads out of the matt. I'd only placed the blocks a few times, and then later noticed that the mat was quickly turning into a big ball of fuzz. I could see this happening if you used the blocks on a random surface, but using it on the friggin mat that it comes with?

I suppose this post is part vent, part PSA I guess. The PSA part is that the mat itself- before it becomes shredded- is almost halfway decent. So if you get this "option" in your car I'd just use the mat and toss the blocks since if you actually use them they'll ruin the mat.

I use mine now and then, but I haven't had any issues like you are describing. When you remove the blocks are you just pulling them straight up? I always do it by like tilting the block sideways so that all of the little velcro hooks aren't trying to disengage at the exact same time. Previous experience with strong velcro taught me that one.

What kind of shaver? I had a similar thought, maybe one of those things like you use to try and fix an old sweater that has been washed too many times, but wasn't sure what might work.

The car is only three months old and I literally only moved the blocks a couple of times and wasn't overly careless or anything.

I have this in my 09 jetta and now in my 17 gti. The one in the jetta has been awesome. We use it all the time. No pulling of threads, and holds perfectly. Probably used it 100x or more easy. The gti I have used twice and the hold is just to strong. I see threads and fuzz pulling on just two uses. They changed something, and it is not for the good. Sadly.

I used a Wahl trimmer on mine. It does make it look like new by removing the fuzz, but it also removes the loops from the carpet surface so the blocks don't hold very well at all in the areas where the carpet is trimmed. Of course the blocks didn't hold well on the fuzz either, so it's just a fact about the blocks and the carpet. Now I just try to minimize moving the blocks.

I assume this thread is about the accessory mat that comes with the cargo blocks and lies over the original carpeting in the hatch area. If this mat gets too frizzy and worn out, why not just buy another one? Isn't this the part that the dealerships are always running sales on?

I use the velcro blocks only occasionally, and so far (one year in) I'm not seeing any obvious damage to the mat. If I need to replace the mat after a few years, that's probably not a big deal for me.

There's one other disadvantage to that mat - it muffles the sound of the subwoofer in my car ('16 GTI Autobahn with Fender Audio).

The problem is I repositioned my blocks like 2 or 3 times and the matt looks awful. Literally every time you pull it up it yanks up a big hunk of threads and forms fuzz. It looks like some dollar store Christmas sweater, if you had worn it about every day of the year and washed it several times each night.

I'm going to give it a shave with the clippers (that was a brilliant idea) and discontinue use of the blocks. I like having extra protection in the hatch area so I don't have to worry as much if a bag of potting soil or something busts open on the way home from Home Depot. At this point I wish they would have included a rubber mat of some sort instead but this one will work for a while.

I think Travall is the way to go. It's rubber. All the others I've seen are plastic and stuff slides all over the place, e.g., Weathertech and OEM plastic. The rubber Travall really is best, although I have to admit I'm still using the carpet CarGo version.

I had this setup in my 2012 Touareg TDI and it had no real wear or problems over 4 yrs. With my new 2016 Golf S, however, I am experiencing the same as described by the OP. I don't know if they use a different quality for each vehicle or if a quality change was made between 2012 and 2016.

Which option did you get? The CarGo blocks or the Heavy Duty Trunk Liner w/CarGo blocks? I can see the blocks pulling hairballs from the standard trunk mat, but the Heavy Duty one should stand up to use better than that. I've used mine for a couple of years without issues. I probably don't move them very often - found a useful position and rarely move them - but the mat seems fine.

Or is it in the trunk and I don't care much about it?

This is the same thing I used. Worked really well. Looks 10x better. Not brand new, but presentable.

The latter, which is what seems to have been a pretty common mandatory add-on for 2016 vehicles. I've "fixed" mine now but should have taken a picture before the shave job. It really looked ridiculous, the trunk mat had fuzz about 2 inches high.

I'm not sure if it is better, or worse, that it was a mandatory purchase. (Did anyone have any luck getting a dealer to remove these add-ons?) The only thing that was OK was the monster floor mats. The "emergency kit" is on a shelf in my garage, maybe I'll throw in my '69 bug where it has a greater chance of being needed :)

My '16 GTI was special ordered. When I went to pick it up, the invoice showed the heavy duty trunk liner, cargo blocks, first aid kit, and rubber floor mats. None of this was stuff that I had requested. The salesman tried to tell me that "all of them come that way" and "we have no control over it". I refused to pay for the extra items. After the usual nonsense ("I have to go speak to my manager"), they dropped the extra charges, left the stuff in the car, and made it seem like they were doing me a huge favor.
