Thanks. The product finder on redline.com comes up with MT-90 as the correct fluid for the 02M in a 2003 Jetta 2.8L, and provides extensive specs on MT-90. The MT-90 page also lists about 30 suitable replacements, but the list of replacements does not include VW part number G052171 which Bentley gives for all 02M's, and which is the VIN-based part number over the phone from the local VW dealership. I guess the dealership looked it up on their internal computer system.

Some of the suitable replacements, such as GM 89021806/7, have a API service class rating of GL-3, but others are GL-4.

The Bentley's table for trans oils (see the links in my first post above) is not clear, listing G50 and G51 as well.

Redline's dealer locator lists a couple nearby stores. Called two. Only one carries the brand. A quart of MT-90 runs $17, same as on redline.com and amazon.com. Not bad compared to $27 at the VW dealers. Ebay prices are higher for single quarts, and can be a bit lower for multi-bottle purchases, $42 for 3, $54 for 4.

Pennzoil.com product finder lists only the 1.9 TDI Jetta, and the Pennzoil Synchromesh page doesn't list any of API's GL service classes

Amsoil.com product finder pulled up engine oil, etc, but not trans oil.

redline MT-90

redline MT 90 hands down, a GL4 lubricant, helped my traded 01 jetta with the poor shifting O2J 5 spd + my 6 spd also shifts better. could not believe how much better it was in the 5 spd, as i could barely get into 2nd then 5th, a bit better instantly + continued to improve until it leveled out!!

Penzoil is GL-4. The 3 choices that have been said is what almost everyone uses beside OEM stuff. I think you are just over thinking it.

Exactly.
Overthinking it big time. Transmissions other than gear ratios are the same design in all the engine options.
Redline, Syncromesh (Penzoil and GM) and Amsoil (only the MTG-Manual Transmission and Gear oil is GL-4) 75w-90 will work fine.
Syncromesh has been the answer for many when others didn't improve things much. Long history and track record of satisfied owners.

Penzoil is GL-4.
Pennzoil.com doesn't have any info on the API service class of synchromesh

https://www.google.com/#q=site:pennzoil.com+synchromesh+api
https://www.google.com/#q=site:pennzoil.com+synchromesh+gl4
https://www.google.com/#q=site:pennzoil.com+synchromesh+"service+class"

nor does the synchromesh Technical Data Sheet

Transmissions other than gear ratios are the same design in all the engine options.
One of the central issues in oil design is the pressure under which the oil needs to perform.

Syncromesh has been the answer for many when others didn't improve things much.
That is an argument against using synchromesh in a transmission that operates without issues.

It has 220k miles on it. One owner. The old oil could have been original. We went with Redline MT-90 for a few reasons. MT-90 was cheaper than OEM from the dealer. Redline seems to have a good reputation amoung VW geeks. Redline lists our engine/trans in the application finder on their website. And Redline says MT-90 is a GL4 service class, which is what Bentley and I presume VW specify, although API retired GL4 quite a while back.

There is a ton of transmision lubrication info in "Synthetics, Mineral Oils, and Bio-Based Lubricants: Chemistry and Technology", edited by Leslie R. Rudnick. Here's the google book:

https://books.google.com/books?id=9YXRBQAAQBAJ&pg=PA459#v=onepage&q&f=false

We could have gone even cheaper and used synchomesh, but Pennzoil doesn't list our eng/trans, doesn't proclaim GL4, and is known to change how transmission operates (for the better when it is not shifting right). But our 02M was working without any issues, so the goal was to keep it operating the same.

With MT-90 now, shifting feels the same as before.
