today I learned that gear oil smells bad and that Redditors can't read labels. :thumbup:

Yes, it is. I believe most of it is the sulfur anti friction compounds in the fluid, although today many other
more modern additives are used in their place to reduce or eliminate the etching that sulfur compounds can cause on
yellow plated metals (usually brass) Most often found in GL-4 spec fluids for light duty synchronized manual transaxles.
 
Tom's Turbo Garage on YouTube did a review of this grape sent gear oil on one of his LS Miata videos. He said it smelled like gear oil with a hint of grape. I doubt there is any mistaking this lube for anything but what it is.
That's no surprise. Gear oil stank will not be culled. It will survive and infect.

I hadn't seen that one. :laugh:
