I have a 2016 GTi VII. I recently complained to VW and to my local dealership about a vibration that feels like the car is about to idle when the car is not moving.
The dealership called VW USA because they were baffled and VW first suggested replacing the injectors which they did to no affect.
They then suggested a software update that I felt worked briefly but then the issue returned very shortly afterwards.
They called in the regional engineer to look - twice and I was told this was normal which I continued to question. Literally passengers in the car can feel the juddering.
So I asked to witness the same thing in another GTi and guess what - it happened in that car too. The service rep said he was surprised he'd not had more complaints and said that some cars have the issue worse than others which indicates that this is not - as VW said it was - intentional.
So I wanted to throw this out to the community to see what you think? Any thoughts or similar experiences would be appreciated.
Hopefully it's not unsafe but this should not be the experience in a brand new car (it's happened since I first got it).

I have sort of the same issue with my car, but it happens at speed as well. I had a '16 that was bought back, and it was smooth as butter, but my '17 vibrates all over the place. At first it was a super high frequency vibration that kinda crept up on me and made my legs numb after 20 minutes of driving. The dealer tech said that pretty much everything from engine to exhaust tips was misaligned, so he readjusted the exhaust and engine, and apparently when the engine mounts were loosened the whole thing shifted several inches. After they did that the vibration lowered in frequency but became more rough, and over the past 2 months or so it's been gradually getting less and less bad while still being noticeable, but there are days when it gets real bad. I took it in for the issue on May 1st, and ever since then the dealership has been waiting for the regional dude to come in and take a look. Called Volkswagen after two weeks to get it sped up, and now two months later I'm still getting weekly follow-up calls saying that the regional rep is unavailable and they don't know when he'll be in my area. Don't expect to get anywhere fast with this.

If the vehicle is not moving, why wouldn't it be at idle? :screwy: May be a surprise to you, but engines running will have some vibration. It should be normal to have some vibration.

I have an 87 Scirocco that dose same thing I've replaced everything and still has bad vibration only in N R or at stand still in gear .I've re aligned mounts checked exhaust and at a dead end anyone with any other ideas plz let me know my Scirocco only has 45,000 original miles on it thanx Sarasota Bill

I've noticed an occasional shuddering at idle that is very pronounced as well. I cannot pin it down to anything specific, be it temperature, AC on/off, or gasoline. A little frustrating as the dealer keeps yelling "bad gas!" but that's BS.

My '15 S manual has a bit of a shudder at idle. It always has.
I assumed it was normal. In my mind, high performance motors may not idle well.
Whether its an aggressive cam profile or a relatively light weight flywheel, a lumpy idle seems par for the course with performance vehicles.
Maybe the dual mass flywheel has something to do with it?

tl;dr its not a bug, it's a feature because, racecar

Did you also replace the small rubber mounts sandwiched in the crossmember? There should be 2 per side behind the bumper mounts. Its part #5 in the image below:

Mine does it in varying amounts, depending on its mood that particular day. I haven't taken it in to be looked at, but the popular opinion based on searches I have done here and other places is that is by design that the engine lopes a bit at idle - seems like the ECU is leaning out the motor after a certain amount of time idling to help with emissions or reduce fuel consumption or something silly like that. Some say that it can vary based on fuel quality or the spark plugs you use. It is more bothersome than anything, but if there was a cure that would be cool - because every so often it does it and I subconsciously try to shove my clutch through the floor, since it feels like I've accidentally started to let the pedal out a little bit...

Does it only happen with clutch engaged, disengaged or both? I've noticed maybe 1/100 times I have the clutch disengaged, I can hear faint clutch chatter, but never had rough idling.

Sorry but what does "the car is about to idle when not moving" mean? I notice some occasional little vibrations at idle, which is normal for pretty much every car I've ever been in. Sometimes they idle completely smoothly, sometimes there are little shudders from time to time.

I have an 87 Scirocco probably not even a hand full of these in existence I've owned 5 and I never knew this was made . I'm told that this is in the six percent of Sciroccos ever made it's an 8 valve automatic and is close to perfect as the day it rolled off the line I've replaced everything except tranny head block and Ac witch is ice cold I have a bad vibration in my steering wheel when stopped in park nitrate or standing still in gear can't change anything else any body have any ideas I'm out of them .I've put 2,634$ in parts in last 5 months .PLEASE SOME ONE GIVE ME SOMETHING TO Go. I just noticed vibration for the first time at idle two days ago. I have 2016 with 18k miles. The tach was steady. I was slightly worried, but I suppose we should come to expect stuff like this from VW. All part of the charm.

I'm assuming you are talking about a "fish bite" during idle? This is common on the tsi engine. Your tach will hold steady, and it will some times feel like the car is going to stall while idling. This is normal, and many people experience it. Some cars are worse than others. My 2015 gets this every so often.
