What about the bigger unit that Europe gets? is that retrofittable ?
To retrofit the 9.2" display, you will also need to upgrade the brain unit to an MIB2.5.

We plan on offering the MIB2.5 retrofit kit next month. Kit would include the 9.2" display, bezel, and programmed MIB2.5 brain unit with component protection removed.

Thanks,
Bill

Amazing.. I'm guessing its going to cost an arm and a leg though haha.

Received my kit today - thanks Bill - and have all the trim successfully popped, but can't for the life of me get the vents pulled out. It's as though they're anchored in place. I found this little blurb in an old post over at Golfmk7.com ...

Quick note for anyone removing center radio trim and to OP: to properly remove this trim you must remove the center vents at the same time. I work for VWoA and can confirm that this was made as one piece (hence the tabs breaking if you don't remove as one). At VW there is a special tool to go into the vent that helps pull it out. The tool is like a pick with a hook that goes into the bottom slat of the vent and catches the back and when pulled helps pull the vents from their seated position. Two metal tabs that are holding it back which I'm sure you can see in the OP's pictures. Just a FYI so you all don't break your stuff.

Wonderful. I emailed Bill and he responded back within minutes, and suggested I might be able to yank from behind with the plastic tool from his kit, reaching in through the airbag light opening. Tried, no dice. At this point I don't want to keep yanking as I don't want to do any damage, if I haven't already. Plan is to visit the local car stereo guru in the morning and see if he can rescue me (or bust something himself).

Any wisdom from those of you who have been there? I found one YouTube video of a guy popping all the trim, then the vents just gently coming straight out. Uh, not working for me. Frustrating.

Pull out the airbag warning light/switch. (Don't disconnect it electrically, and turn on the ignition, or you will have to go to the dealer to get the dash error light reset.)
Now use needle nose plyers, or make a coat hanger wire double hook to grip the sturdy plastic braces inside the cavity where the airbag switch was. Now make sure all the lower part of the trim panel above the a/c controls is unsnapped from its clips by pulling with finger tips.
Now pull on the airbag zone with a quick yank straight back. The trim panel should pop out of its upper clips. If it doesn't you are not pulling hard enough. It really does just pop out.

Mine came out easy enough with the trim. *from memory* The back of the vents has a foam gasket / weather stripping around the rectangular body. It is a compression/friction fit to the duct. What may be happening is the adhesive from this gasket (underside) has grabbed the duct and feels like it's mechanically being held there.

Using a hook tool and prying outward from the hazard light area should solve your issue. Thanks to the other posters who came to the rescue!

Thanks for all the replies fellas. No matter what I tried - finesse, force, following directions of those providing tips.. nothing worked, I could NOT extract the vents from the dash. So, I took it to a pro this morning. Even they had some difficulty getting the thing dislodged, but in the end, it finally gave up its fight and all is well. The 8" screen is definitely a nice upgrade over the 6.5-incher.

Bill, I have a 2016 Golf R base model. no NAV and no Fender stereo system. some q's
1. if i buy the from the link you mentioned what else exactly would have to be done?
2. do i need to go to the dealer for anything at all?
3. Is the GPS antenna iincluded the same as the 2016 Golf R's that came with NAV?
4. does the GPS antenna mount in the same location as the 2016 Golf R's that came with NAV?
5. how is the maps loaded? by DVD?
6. are the maps google maps based or something else? if so, what?
7. Lastly, how do i update the maps data for the future? is there a DVD or something that I need to pay for in the future.

thanks much!

Assuming you are referring to the Discover Pro Retrofit Kit, it is essentially plug and play. You may need to toggle one audio setting using Vagcom once installed to enable sound, but otherwise the install is quick and easy.

You will not need to visit the dealership for this install. Simply replace the unit in your glovebox with this one, and install the new 8" display if desired. You can keep your old screen without the Nav buttons, swap to the 6.5" version with the Nav button, or one of our 8" display options.

The antenna included is a direct fit fakra external GPS Antenna. In the Golf R's with Nav, the GPS antenna is built into the sharkfin roof antenna. It is noted that the non-nav MIB2's have a GPS connection to sync time and other features (blue fakra connection in the rear of the MIB2), so this may work with the Discover Pro. We will still include the external GPS antenna at no cost with our kit, just in case.

Maps included are 2018 North America Maps. They are VW Navteq maps, not google based.

You will need a dealership to update map data, or send the unit back to us for map updates. VW moved away from the DVD map upload option for this generation of Nav units.

Thanks,
Bill
