When I got my first car with an automatic trans, it was a 93 Honda Accord Wagon. One of the features I got to really appreciate was what they called "2nd gear winter start"
The idea was, selecting second gear when pulling away from a stop when you were in snow or slippery conditions. 2nd gear would take some of the torque off the engine to help reduce wheel spin.
My Honda had this, as did my BMW 323iT and my G8. My MkVI GTI, equipped with DSG however, did not.
Yesterday, we got our first appreciable snowfall in my area, and my first outing in my new R-Line. I was happy to find that the 8spd in the Jetta also features a 2nd gear start.
All is right with the world!
