W12 Phaeton starts fine. Then after 15-20 minutes of running, the engine reverse to idle speed only

I am the original owner of a 2004 W12 phaeton. There are now 107K miles on the car. I have now left my beautiful car somewhat out of sight and out of mind for the last several years in the far stall of my garage. The most recent repair I made to the car was to have the front air struts rebuilt by a shop in Florida and reinstalled by a VW Phaeton dealer from Mt. Prospect, Il. After driving the car for several hundred miles, the car is now only able to start, idle and run well for a short time before reverting to idle rpm only. It seems to power all functions, but will only drive at idle power with no throttle response. I've become disgusted at engaging VW service as I am never really confident the techs are familiar enough with the car to make a good diagnosis and affect a reasonable repair. So, I was hoping someone would recognize this problem and at least give me a cardinal direction to which I should set course.

Your ABS controller is bad. Pull the harness connector from it and the throttle will respond again. You could also try pulling the fuse, but I'm not sure that'll work. It took one of my local dealers about 3 weeks and a new ECU to figure it out on mine.

Any lights on the dash?

Scan the car with VCDS and report back, that'll tell you for sure. You possibly have a sensor reference voltage fault. Any sensor on the related circuit or related wiring can cause this fault. When the fault occurs the ECU disables the supply for that circuit, creating additional fault codes. These can be fun to diagnose. I fixed a Phaeton with this fault last week, had to check every 5v sensor on the car until eventually finding the issue to be the fuel composition sensor that had a leak to ground.

Certain fault codes in the air suspension controller can also prevent the engine from running above idle, usually it's the "ride height too low" one that causes it. I've also heard that the ABS sensors on the wheels can cause this but haven't encountered it myself (they are easy to access with the wheels off).

Excellent decision but I'm surprised, considering you bought your P new, that you hadn't yet invested in one. It's such a helpful tool. Make sure you buy the genuine cable from Ross Tech and not a knock-off Chinese one.

It's a good buy, but it probably won't help a lot with this particular problem, you'll likely have errors on several controllers even though the source of all of them is the ABS controller. The way to diagnose it is to pull the connector from the ABS controller, as soon as you do that the throttle will work again. The reason it runs for 20 minutes is because the controller gets heat soaked. That 15 to 20 minutes will get steadily shorter.

I have put a new battery along side it and connected jumper cables to the appropriate battery terminals. I'm curious if many of the "lower limit" faults would correct with a new battery attached. That's most likely the reason for the limp mode, a friend's Phaeton recently showed the same symptoms when he forgot to reconnect one of the wheel speed sensors after some maintenance work. Yours shows it as intermittent so you might want to unplug, clean connector and replug the sensor to see if that will fix it. Otherwise you could just put a new one in, they are not that expensive and are really easy to change out.

I have received a wheel speed sensor for the left front wheel. I am attempting to remove the old one. I have the 5mm Allen bolt out. But I can't budge the sensor from its position. Although it appears to be hard plastic, it's as if its sealed to the rusty inlet port. I wanted some guidance before I put much force on it. Im certain I will likely break it off. Is the sensor connected in any other way other than by the Allen bolt? I'm wanting to check out the connection you mentioned. However, I can't figure out how to release the harness wire from the sensor. Trick?

That Allen bolt is the only thing securing that sensor. On one of mine it was really difficult to remove also due to the rust built up in the hole. You can try to rotate the sensor in the hole to break the rust buildup but let it soak in penetrating oil first. You can use a small pry bar on the end of the sensor that has the hole for the bolt, to try to get it to move a little, then put more penetrating oil on it. I assume you already removed the brake airflow shield to get better access to it?! The electrical connector is your typical VW style connector. Push it in first (towards the sensor), depress the tab and then pull back. The tab lifts the little hook that secures the connector but be careful not to put too much pressure on the tab or it will break off.

Left front wheel speed sensor removed and replaced.

O.k. I ended up destroying the old sensor during removal. The orifice into which it seats had the plastic probe fairly well jammed by expanded corrosion to the point that it would not budge by any method I know. After removing the brake caliper, the disc and the shield, I was able to clean out the sheared off probe by drilling it out. Kind of amazing how tough the plastic is. The remainder of install went well.

Scan is still showing left front wheel speed sensor fault. Ross-Tech helper advised me to go into the ABS module and check on each wheel speed reading.

I can't do this because the scanner indicates that the controller is not responding.

Does this indicate that the ABS controller is in need of removal and repair?

Yep. You are correct in that I am able to get throttle response back and drive the car with the ABS harness pulled out of the ABS ECU.
With this done, the car operates with no speedometer and what feels like 3rd gear ( display has all the transmission gear settings lit as when you first start up) with speed limited to about 60mph.

I've read a post which describes mostly what I'm experiencing with the fix being removal of the ABS controller and repair by "cheapabs", an online electronics repair service.

I'm considering this.

Yes, if the repair is significantly cheaper, that's probably the route I'd go too. Mine was done under warranty, so I got a new one, in addition to a new ECU because the dealer mis-diagnosed the problem, they only found it because Willem suggested pulling the plug and I passed that on to the tech.

I have extricated the ABS unit from my 2004 VW Phaeton. I am sending it off to a repair service to have the internal electronics inspected and repaired. In the mean time I am finding online that this unit is used in many other makes and models. Assuming I am able to reprogram anther makers' model, does anyone have experience with sourcing the electronic controller from another model, installing it in the Phaeton, and then reprogramming? I'm interested in this with the idea that I might be able to get a more modern electron controller which has not been exposed by and therefore likely to have been affected by the long-term heating issues associated with the failure.

If it is getting repaired competently, it should be better than any used controller. It should also still be coded to your Phaeton unless the coding was already corrupted.

If you are referring to an exact match (including prefixes and suffixes) using the vendor part number, than I would say it's likely compatible.

You would have to re-code it and VCDS has a coding helper for the ABS controller.

That might be worth trying, but a used one is not going to be as good as your (competently) repaired one.

Sometimes electronic repair centers use better components then those they remove.

Repaired ABS Controller reinstalled

I have completed installation of the repaired ABS controller.

We can reach the controller with the scanner and all the programming seems to match my car.
On scan, it appears there are no faults in the unit.

However, on test drive after a short distance ( less than a mile) the "Level Fault-Workshop" message is displayed and the car goes into limp mode.
I can turn it off, restart and drive for a short while until this repeats.

Still Limping along

I purchased a new VPS battery. I needed one and I wanted to rule out any low voltage bogies I might be getting.

Here's my status:

In the beginning of this exercise, the first scan of the car revealed a left front wheel speed sensor failure. Although it was completely seized in its port and broke on removal, I cleaned out the hole and installed a new one.

From performing a more in depth scan with the help of a Ross tech, I learned that the scanner was unable to reach the ABS controller.

Then, I removed ABS unit and sent it to the CheapABS.com guy in Kansas. It was repaired, returned and replaced. Then, scanner was able to reach the controller.

Now, with the repaired controller installed, the car starts and seems as though it will idle forever without entering limp mode (no ABS fault displayed). However, once I drive the car about 100 yards from the house, the "Level Fault" is displayed followed by ABS light illuminating and I'm back into limp mode. I can shut down the car and restart. This gets me back to running with full rpm until I put it in drive and go about 100 yards, I'm back to limp mode.

Prior to all this, the car would run nicely at idle for about 20 minutes and then enter limp mode. It would not exit limp mode until the car was pretty much cooled down.

Clear codes, drive until fault trips again, rescan.

Posting scans when the car has sat with a low battery just muddies the waters at times.

Yes,

Clear the faults.

Even after a "mere" battery charge, I often have to clear the faults 3 or more times to get back to my baseline.

I run an auto scan, save the results and clear all faults individually on the controllers, then I do another Auto Scan and do a "Clear All DTCs" (after saving that scan) at least once.

You should be idling your Phaeton while running scans if you aren't already. That way the left battery doesn't lose any charge.

I have cleared all codes and run the car until the fault causes limp mode. Then, I ran a scan with the car idling.

I am concerned with the left front wheel speed sensor "mechanical failure" message. This is the one I replaced. It was corroded hard fast in its port and I broke it while removing it. I carefully drilled out the old pieces and installed a new one. Not knowing where and how a tone ring might be oriented to the sensor hole, I fear I may have damaged it. If this is possible, does anyone have any drawings or photos of the tone ring and how it is oriented?

It's pretty clear that's what's causing the problem now. I don't have any advice on fixing it though, I haven't had to touch mine yet. The ECU error is also of concern, what happens if you try to clear that one through the controller?

If my Phaetons have had an ECU 2 fault, I will get a fault in ECU 1 telling me to Check DTC Memory of ECU 2. That's even after the fault in ECU 2 is cleared or went away. You can clear faults in ECU 2 without affecting readiness. It depends if I have an inspection coming up if I clear the "Check DTC Memory of ECU 2" fault in ECU1. I have even had readiness set with an actual ECU1 fault (but I reset it anyway).

His readiness isn't set anyway so he can clear the faults in ECU 1.

I've never read into all the connections of the ABS/ASR logic wide because I have never had an issue- but what if you press the traction control button off and try to drive?

Nothing in that scan points to any reason you would have a level fault.

So many errors pointing to voltage problems even shortly after clearing memory.

I've had same situation with random errors and missing communication from various control units when the wires from the trunk door were splitted and gone in short circuit.

It behave like a mice has eated some wires, and now gives errors all over due to a short circuit. :facepalm:

Regardless to the abs ring, there is no ring on the joint like others. The "ring" is on the bearing. So, i don't think you're able to broke it. Anyway check his integrity by removing the abs sensor.

With VCDS you're able to see the pulses coming from any abs sensor when wheel is spinning. If you'll not see anything coming from sensor when the wheel it's spinning, maybe there is still some trouble with abs electronics.

I am able to read data from all 4 wheels when I have it rolling. However, once the car gets up to a certain speed, the indicated wheel speeds of all four wheels seem to stall at about 17-18Km per hour despite accelerating well beyond this speed.. Shortly after this, I get the fault which causes the car to enter limp mode.

Does this sound like I am still having problems with the ABS controller despite having had it fixed?

W12 Phaeton starts fine. Then after 15-20 minutes of running, the engine reverse to idle speed only
