Since there are a lot of MkII fans here, I’ll repost this video in case anyone missed it
This was really cool! Thanks for sharing.

This thread is making me want to get another mk2 really bad. It's been too long since I've owned one (roughly 4 years now I think?).

OP- That looks like a fun little project. Interior work is one of the easiest to tackle on mk2's IMO. Every time I buy one I do pretty much the same "interior work" such as pulling out the seats and carpet to clean the floors, replace with better padding/sound deadening, usually replacing with a nicer black carpet, redoing the inside door vapor barriers, replacing door scrapers and door seals (these can get pricey if buying NOS parts) and making sure the sunroof doesn't leak by cleaning out the tracks and making sure the seal is still good.

Hopefully the rain drip rails are still in good shape on the jetta. Those are one of the hardest parts to find in good shape and I think new ones are NLA. There may be some aftermarket options for those by now though.

Thanks - so far it has been enjoyable. I sold my GTI this week so I am hoping to have more funds available to throw at the MK2. I just want to get the interior out of the way so I can have it done and focus on the mechanical aspects of which there are many. Going to need lots of love.

The drip rails are fine except for the drivers side behind the door frame on the A pillar. It is pretty chewed up in that spot and I don't know whether it is still water tight or not.

This may help. I used this thread a long time ago to replace the lower section of the door seal on my old jetta coupe.

Be careful as you can end up spending some serious money on this website, lol: https://vintagerubber.com/volkswagen/jetta-mk-2/

FYI, the drip rails are another Jetta coupe only item. Though with those, you can still use 4 door Jetta drip rails, you just have to modify them to work, if I remember right. It's probably been 8 years since I sold my last mk2, though, so I may be mistaken.

There's only a handful of parts that were specific to the jetta coupe. Quarter windows, drip rails, headliners, and C-pillar trim pretty much cover it, I think. Everything else is basically either the same as a 4 door jetta or a 2 door golf/gti.

Sounds right. Thanks for the info. Luckily most of it is there and in at least passable shape. Think when it comes to the headliner I might remove the rear glass and slide it out the back so as not to break it any more than I need to. I keep looking at it and can't imagine getting it out the door.

It is definitely possible to get it out the door. I re-did the headliner in my '90 coupe. Definitely helps to take both front seats out. Mine broke into 3 pieces coming out, but after fixing it while it was out, I was able to get it back into the car in one piece.

Honestly, the hardest part of the whole thing is trying to figure out how to support it so that it doesn't break just from the weight of the board/material. Seemed like even just touching it wrong would break the board. I half remember seeing somebody reinforce the entire back of the board with fiberglass to prevent it from being so easy to break. I did just the front half and the rear corners from what I remember.

Everything is out so that won't be an issue. I was thinking about running lines of painters tape along it before removing but I don't know if (A) it will stick to the surface or (B) if it will damage the card if it does stick.

I also thought about just taking a sharp blade and cutting it right down the middle (door to door at the b pillar) and then fully repairing it while out. Not sure if that is a good idea either but figured one long cut might be easier to fix than a bunch of broken pieces.

To get tape to stick to the board you have to remove the existing foam residue once you remove the existing headliner fabric/vinyl. Aluminum HVAC tape works well as it is pretty strong and sticky, but can give you a gnarly paper cut.

And yes, removing the front seats is a must for getting the headliner in/out

my favorite VW service tool:
That's some funny ****. :laugh::laugh:

So I really need to stay off Craigslist guys. Is there any kind of support group?

I need to move near you the only thing on Craigslist near me is roached Golfs that look like they've been underwater after being hit by a semi and they are trying to get $6000 for them.
