Anyone else run into this issue? My car sat for a week without being driven. I got in it this morning and disengaged the parking break the light went out but the rear break is still engaged. Tried turning the car off and starting again with the same results. Had it happen a month ago but it seemed to break free after letting out the clutch and giving it a tad more throttle. This seemed to flat spot my rotor as I had vibration when braking afterwards. Not sure what to do other than call the local dealer/roadside/VW.

The car has a tad over 3k miles and is a 2022 manual S model.

Same here, in the colder winter weather or anytime there is a ton of moisture, they bind a bit until I start moving. Annoying...and then you get to hear the grinding for a little bit until the brakes clean up through use.

Same here, happens in wet conditions, even just overnight. Horrible sound when "breaking free". Have a manual transmission, so might switch to just leaving car in 1st gear when parking to prevent rolling. Did that with my MK7 always anyways and never really used the parking break.

I often had this problem with my basic Canadian manual GTI and decided to no longer use my parking brakes for the winter period and the dealership found nothing wrong. This problem happened even after only 8 hours of using my car. I did some research and it may be due to low battery voltage. I drive very little with my car and my battery may not be fully charged. I bought a smart charger and it fixed all parking assist, SOS and warning alert issues and hill start assist alert. I had alerts every day and it's been 6 weeks now that everything is normal. I'm still afraid to use my handbrakes but I'm sure that was the cause of the problem..

I also read that manual GTIs are more affected by mutiple warning problems and I think it's probably because the models with manual transmission do not have the Stop / Start system and do not have the same battery. I think the models with this system have an AGM battery and the models with manual transmission have a conventional lead-acid type battery. My message was written with Google translation because I am not a French speaker. Sorry if you have trouble reading.

Yes it is set so that it does not turn on automatically but I would still like to be able to use it without fear that it will remain blocked the next day. For the moment I put my car in reverse when I park my car and I will start using it again when the snow has melted.

The way I get it to unbind is to drive it, I just back out of the garage in reverse and it unbinds after a brief moment.

I have mine in a heated garage also, and it still does this in the cold weather with snow and moisture. Again, another reason why I am an advocate of a manual rear parking break.

Glad I'm not the only one! Happens on my 2019 R...only on the rear drivers side, that I can tell.

simple fix guys, take a 6" x 8" round log split it in half sand the flats smooth on both halves, remove the bark, or leave it your choice, then use a fair amount of Gorilla Glue spitz with water and glue the flat sides of the logs to the flat surface of a clean piece of plywood and let dry, you can finish with a quality wood sealant or epoxy, let dry , now you have made a functional set of wheel chocks and can now place where you normally park your vehicle, no brakes necessary just park your rear wheels between the log halves and you can leave the brake off save that for steep embankments

Yep, same here. Got it washed before a couple of snow storms, when the roads were cleared of salt, pulling out of the garage gave the crack of parking brake letting loose. This is all normal stuff here in the northeast US.

A little update, I was not able to get the parking brake to release so I called VW roadside. They dispatched a tow truck. The tow truck driver hooked up chains and a winch and pulled it out breaking the parking brake free in the process. It drug the car quite a ways before a loud grinding pop sound. Still had it towed to the nearest VW who confirmed that it locked up again at the dealership. They are ordering a new parking brake button which is on back order of course. Used the opportunity to have them look at the gear shifter and shift knob that’s cracked and pulling off repeatedly. Will be turning the parking brake off in the car settings (never knew this was a thing) and not using it ever once I get the car back.

Unfortunately I am not sold on moisture being the reason. I am sure it doesn't help. But I daily my GTI and I get stuck rear parking brake maybe1-2 times a week. It does happen more often in the cold, here in Michigan it gets down to single digits. But It also happens in summer.

When the button fails to do its job, I just drive hard from a stand still. It definitely is not good. But there are so many things wrong with these MK8s.

Has VW actually fixed this issue for anyone?

It's moisture/ice/slight rust that comes from the brakes getting wet. I park in an attached unheated garage (in Michigan), and have had a few instances this winter where, despite releasing the parking brakes, there's a significant 'pop' when the rotor breaks away from the pads.

On former VW's, I would just pull the parking brake up one click, so it was only holding lightly. The issue is that these electric parking brakes give you full San Francisco Lombard Street (anyone else remember Bill Cosby's bit on driving a VW on Lombard Street?) holding power every time.

I'm tempted to turn my automatic parking brake off, too, but I just know that there will be one day when it's on a slight incline and I forget to set it manually AND forget it's not in gear......

Is it possible to turn off the automatic parking brake on a DSG too, or only on the manual?
On DSG cars, when you are going to park the car, if you Select 'P' after coming to a stop and then turn off the engine it will not engage parking brake. But when the car is still in drive, you turn off the car, it will shift to 'P' and also apply the parking brake.

Fair point - but is there an option to disable the automatic parking brake from engaging even when turning the car off while in drive?
