Hello everyone I currently have a 1982 vw caddy originally it was a 1.8L diesel but has been swapped to a gas GX engine. (the engine swap was done by the previous owner.) I have no idea what year the engine is or any details about it. The only thing I know about the GX engine is that it has a digi head on it (running a 40mm intake compared to the stock 38mm intake) the fuel injection system is CIS originally but has been swapped to a carburetor (weber 38/38 DFEV i think?) I know with the GX engine there is not a lot of info out there and finding parts and info is a pain to put it into the nicest way possible. I was talking to my brother, dad, and a couple over people about engine swapping the car to an ABA, my dad pitched the idea of engine swapping the car a lot sooner then planned instead of investing my time and money into the GX because of how vague it is and the same amount of money and time will probably get spent with engine swapping it. I agree with him a lot but this is my first project car very first I'm still in high school and learning a lot I have very very basic mechanically skills and engine swapping a car is way out of skill level for right now but I know I can do it, it'll just be really hard. The main question I'm asking is do you think it'll be worth it to hop into the challenge straight away with an ABA swap or keep the GX and save the swap for later?

Yes do the swap now. If you're going to change management then you might as well change the motor so you have all the sensors you need. Then you can decide if you want to go standalone EFI like megasquirt, or just acquire the entire control system with the ABA and run it as is.

will do for the aba i wanna run it with cis-e for right now but I'm not %100 sure yet what FI i want yet

Does this thing run and drive as it should? Personally, if you don’t have a lot of experience or a lot of money(?), stick with what you have and do some research.

The diesel vs CIS hard lines under the car will be different, so some plumbing may be required, if you want to go FI. With that diesel fuse panel, it’s going to be missing critical wiring for anything CIS. I’m guessing that’s why carbs were used.
