Also, do short shifters make a good, positive difference in these trannies?

The B&M shifter is garbage.

For the 02a set up, you have the TMtuning shifter (RSD), Neuspeed (Modified stock for $500), or make your own.
Gruvenparts makes a side to side reduction piece. With stock front to back throw, this is stupid.

There are aluminum shifter cable bracket bushings available. With the o2j shifter they help feel alot. With the o2a, they make almost no difference.

Swapping to a 02j setup is $100 times better then all those options, and then short shifters are also readily available. There are also solid cable ends, ect that make the o2j even better.

The o2j comes in later model mkiv cars right?

Definitely upgrade to the o2j shift box and tower. It's a much smoother shifting setup and like John said, short shifters are cheap and readily available for them. I wouldn't waste any money modifying the o2a linkage. I bought my o2j setup for $200 with about 60k miles on it.

Ya I upgraded my 99.5 shifter to the late model shifter assembly, and I can promise you... Holy****. I had a neuspeed ss on my stock 99.5 tdi, and the STOCK late model shifter assembly was just amazing. What a fantastic upgrade. Where would I find that. Assembly for sale again tho?

I got mine in the classifieds. I would just look for mk4 1.8t part outs and see if anyone still have the shift assembly. $200 seemed to be the going price when i bought mine a few months ago. That was in 100% working condition, not needing any new bushings, etc.
