I was just curious cuz the electronic seats might be worth it. Climatronic i've never had so i dunno what it does or how it works. (obiously its the AC control) but i just have no idea how it works.
any more info?
they dont seem that kind of hard.
let me know!
or are any of them possible at all? what would be needed?

If you search both have been covered, both can be done, but not for the beginer modder.
Climatronic required an intire new dash harness and heater box, plus the unit itself.

12 hours to do the install last weekend.
Need to replace the heater box, and the Climatronic Control Unit.
Most of the work is wiring related.
Total cost for parts from wrecking yard... $250.....
I rate it about a 7 on the difficulty scale.

OK, first pass at a parts list... I'm going to go ahead and try to get OEM prices for these parts, then I'll look at junkyards ;^)
Climatronic Head
Temp Reg Motor
Footwell Flap motor
Central flap motor
air flow flap motor
fresh air temp sensor
floor outlet temp sensor
outside air temp sensor
sunlight sensor
control module for fresh air blower
+ four wiring harnesses
I was told a new AC/Heater box was needed as well, but for the life of me I can't see why with the Bentley drawings. In there it seems that the cable controls from the manual are identical to the servo controls of the climatronic system; all are operating the same flaps.
The only one which throws me is the Climatronic's "Air Flow" servo being attached to the air flow flap rod and the air/recirculating flap shaft.... is it just one control surface or two??
I've got questions into Eric about this... hopefully we can get some answers figured out.
If anyone knows anything, the input would be GREAT!!
Thanks!

Well, here are the first quotes coming back:
  • Climatronic Head = $55 for the "Dash Control Unit" from 1st VW
  • Temp Reg Motor = $94
  • Footwell Flap motor = $94
  • Central flap motor = $94
  • air flow flap motor = $94
  • fresh air temp sensor = $16
  • floor outlet temp sensor = $16
  • outside air temp sensor
  • sunlight sensor = $25
  • control module for fresh air blower = $115four wiring harnesses
    * all prices are from browsing 1st VW parts

So, without the Climatronic Header or harnesses, the OEM brand-new part price at this point is $550; $600 if that is the correct Climatronic Head price. And the harnesses+outside temp are still required.
And that might not work because the motors won't come with the control levers found in a VR6; but those parts ARE available. They are simple pieces of plastic which at worse could be manufactured on demand.
The price on those stepper motors is outrageous and I seriously didn't think OE would charge more than $50 for each of those. I think I'll end up starting with junkyard parts and moving forward.
Look for more posts in the future.

The box needs to be replaced and there's no way around that. The Non-Climatronic box doesn't have the holes in it for the 2 temparature sensors or the blower motor resitor pack. there are also a couple different indetations to clear the additional wiring harness connections needed.

I know its been a while, but I am still trying to work on this.
The install could go one of two ways:
1.) OEM install: This process would use 100% OE parts from either new or junkyard. Might be expensive, might not. Eric (SVTWEB) got his for around $250. All new parts would price out at somewhere under $1000.
2.) Aftermarket install: How can an OE system be an aftermarket install? Well, when you supstitute different motors in place of the original ones because they are overpriced. Quality would be similar to using junked OE parts.
It's not fun to hear, but the way Eric did it is the best way possible because he used a completed subassembly instead of constructing his own. I've followed his other threads and he always does things the right way regardless of cost. That method also required no re-engineering / development.
I'm going to start by following his methods and then attempt to develop an affordable non-junk solution.
Thanks for the support everyone!
