Got a chance to get a "slightly used/almost new" autotech system....the perf downpipe, and 2" system with resonator and Dynomax super turbo muffler......basically from the downpipe back. I would be putting this on a 1980 'rocco' with the 1.6L......
Will this provide good perf. gains? Good exhaust tone/sound? Sound? Thoughts out there? Sorry for the post here since this is going on a 'rocco' but wanted to get some thoughts from other Mk1 owners........THX!
Want a good performance gain, but also looking for good tone too.....

I had one. I would not recommend them. The Dyno showed a 10hp gain when I switched to TT and a dual outlet manifold.
I don't like it's 3-piece design. It is made form some really heavy guage pipe though. They sound ok, but don't expect a nice performance gain.
Save yer pennies an go TT

I put a 2.25 system on my rocco, and i liked it.. i think at most it may be a 5hp gain. I had a bellvue motorsports header, with the autotech cat-back system and it was a tad loud for my taste, so i urchased a glasspack and put it in front of the muffler to act as a resonator and it was perfect.. TT is still the way to go.

Re: Need your thoughts on Autotech exhaust system....... (Krautwagen)

I have looked at both sites to get an idea about both....it appears that both systems look very, very similar from Techtonics and Autotech......Techtonics made that much better? How does the Dynaomax super turbo sound???

The fit of the TT system is much better. It's hard to get the Autotech system to sit right because of the extra joint. The Dynimax is a decent sound, pretty quiet. It's definitely a good muffler to start things off with, until you can hear flowmaster or borla, or if you just don't like 'em loud. Autotech seems to be just a bigger pipe design, whereas TT actually does some dyno testing on their stuff. Even though the TT has thinner pipes, the quality if the material used compensates that, along with the weight savings (the Autotech is fairly heavy).

Re: Need your thoughts on Autotech exhaust system....... (Krautwagen)

I'd honestly say, both systems are fairly heavy.. the TT one, i used to go through hangers all the time, then just went to the chain hangers.. I have always gone Autotech systems, but thats just cuz my friend works there and he can hook me up, but since i am doing a project car, and want the best, I went with a full TT system.. The systems are really similar, both ome with the same muffler, and i actually prefer it to the flowmaster.. eventually i am going to upgrade to a SS with borla, but for now, the dynomax is perfect..
How much are you getting the Autotech system for?

If you can believe it......$100 shipped with perf downpipe, complete 2" back to the Dynomax super turbo.......all hangers, etc. too. It is an awesome deal.....just not sure if I'll be happy with the tone/sound???

when i first got my exhaust (tt 2 inch with dynomax) my car was completely stock. fit was great and sound was good too. a friend of mine had a 84 GTi very similar to mine, except he didn't have AC and he was running an Autotech exhaust. He had one rattle he was never able to get rid off, the system didn't sound nearly as good, and my car was deffinitly a touch faster (though i know this could have been attributed to lots of other possibilities as well). Other people i've talked to seem to have had similar experiences

Re: Need your thoughts on Autotech exhaust system....... (woody96)

I've run both systems in the past (and had numerous friends running both) and found the fit of the TT system to be better. I honestly couldn't tell you a difference in performance or sound between them (just depends on what options you get with each) but I ALWAYS go with TT now for the ease of installation.

Well, since I started this....just wantd to reiterate that I was sure hoping to get some more feedback on tone/sound? It seems like the consensus is it is fairly quiet like OEM,........ does it have a deep tone? Get louder over time? Anyone have some thoughts. Again, I have a deal on the autotech sport downpipe, and 2" system with resonator and Dynomax super turbo........will be taking off the old system to include the CAT----SC doesnt have emissions checks and this was orignally a CA car......this 1.6L has the better 4-2 manifild......

I have the Autotech 2" on my Cabriolet. It's far from quiet but it's not obnixiously loud. The fit was fine and its lasted thus far.
The tone (with a dual DP) is quite nice at idle and it's pretty mean at WOT.
