16v swap in CA

Do you guys know if it is legal to swap a 16v into a 1985 vw gti, because i know that some engine swaps are illegal because of smog and the sort, if there is a database with this information please post a link

yes it's legal, and yes you'll have to get it refereed

i know nothing of cali emissions but i do know that they make black zipties

You wont have a problem with the swap. Some will tell you that they wont smog it because you have a intake, etc... As long as the set-up is clean...No problems man.

it means you will have to take it to an inspector and have them go through the smog rituals and visual inspections.

basically... uhm there is a law in cali that i heard of that the engine you are swapping in your car has to be from a newer car than your car...

pretty much.
my gti is a east coast car with mods and i had no problem getting it smogged on this past friday. probly the same for a 16v.

1. No backdating (old motor in new car)
2. if you you take it to the SMOG ref you must have a really clean swap, also means no CAI, headers, no big holes in the firewall ect...
I'v known many people who dont go to the ref.. just smog it at some tinny ass shop in the ghetto and they dont think twice about 8v vs. 16v.

once ur car has been refereed, they will declare it whatever model the engine comes from...so if you have a '98 engine, it will be smogged to a '98 standard and will require OBD2. And for 16v, it's same.
Does anyone know if going from SOHC to DOHC is a big deal with the ref?
I've also wonder if anyone ever try (altho illegal and I forbid u from trying) swapping ur vin, plate, paper to a stock car that is exactly the same as yours and smog it. I mean people swap door, subframes, engines...it's jsut like swapping back ur original part, but just got every single part from the donor car.

dunno...
the papers they gave me at the smog shop had my ride-piece listed as a 16v. then again...i went to a small-ass shop in the LBC. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif cha

Tecnicly swaping any part on the body or other wise that has the VIN on it is illigal, and the VIN is on many parts of the car.
Your suposed to log it with the DMV when you swap any parts like that.. course no one does.
