I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice as my car is running verry rich...I have a 1992 1.8 gti digi 2 golf. I have been getting poor fuel economy and have a black stripe up the back of my bumper as a result...During the winter i have experiences some eratic idle as well...my mechanic did a tune up about 5 mo ago and replaced coolant temp sensor and plugs and did the timing...i have not had a chance to take it back since these symptoms have reoccoured...any ideas

Re: Rich 8v (sprocket007)

theres a very long list of things to check...
1. coolant temp sensor (check the ohm range)
2. maf (also check its ohm range)
3. o2 sensor
4. timing
5. bad ground ( is your engine bay messy ? )
6. spark plug gap is way out of wack ?
7. ecu
8. ignition control module
those are the things that come to mind right now, most likely its the coolant temp sensor, how does the car start when its warm ? is it real jerky and sensative when you let off the gass ?

Re: Rich 8v (nogogl)

What are your thoughts on the idle when the car is reved past 2500 rpm...let off the gas pedal and the idle drops to about 500rpm bounces up past about 1100-1200 then settles to normal idle speed of 950...The car does not stall and this symptom seems more prevalent when the weather is cold...What would be the cause of this? ISV? Would this idle pattern cause th car to be running rich?

Re: Rich 8v (sprocket007)

mine actually did that too when I first bought it, turned out to be a vacume leak in the isv and my idle screw had backed its self back in so I raised the idle just a tad and that went away

Re: Rich 8v (nogogl)

Thanks for your help...i bumped up the idle a bit and reset the ECU and that seems to help...With the pendulm idle after rev up...I'll have to see if it still runs rich...i think it will...
