Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (Neu Bug)

I looked into this and opten NOT to go this route..
you just about need a front clip..
You have to get the 1.8t front spindles, axle, carriers, brakes (rotors - calipers and pads) to...
...also the ECU AND if you have to watch out for if you are going to drive-by-wire or not to carry over that stuff too..

In the end I determined the cost to be about $3600 when it was all said and done... so the Neuspeed supercharger looked like a better deal all around!

You don't HAVE ro get those things.. infact you can even use the 2L tranny if you were on a budget...it's essentially 40 bolts and 6 plugs to swap in a 1.8T.. but I've said it a thousand times .. don't build a car you can buy

Sorry, you CANNOT use the 2.0 front axle, spindle, rotors, calipers, pads, etc.. It just doesn't connect!!! AND you can't just use the 2.0 ECU either.. NICE TRY but it simply will NOT work without those components!!!
...and if you are going to or from drive-by-wire you MUST have the components for it too!

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (Ibid)

ECU is considered when I say harness.. and have you done it smart guy... I have.. axles tranny and brakes are compatible.. not same, but compatible.. and you are right DBW requires an different pedal assembly I was just being vague.. cause the idea of swapping is just dumb, when you can buy the car with a 1.8T

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (CountBlah..)

from one NEU-BUG to another Neu Bug ... Turbo your 2.0 or supercharge it... after supercharge you'll run like a stock vr6, and after turbo you'll smoke a stock vr6

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (Ibid)

If you use a 2.0 tranny, then the axles and all components out to the wheels will work. Why shouldn't it if the tranny bolts on to the motor?

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (searocko)

it was my understanding that the 2.0 tranny can't handle the turbo power long term and your best off with the proper tranny in the first place!

well my tranny is crap, synchro is gone! its buzzez into 3rd and hangs in 4th, it needs to go! BUT screw the 1.8t swap for now I have found a vr 24v and i am investigating that route, I have the ecu harness cluster, steering column, my car allready is drive by wire, but it includes pedal too. motor top to bottom and 6 spd tranny. My questions are motor mounts? and other than that anyone else think of anything that will hinder this? evap, fuel pump, radiator

and as for supercharge and run like stock vr6 and turbo and kill vr6, show me numbers to back that up. I looked into the NS SC and everyone screamed no! I looked into atp turbo or EIP turbo and that left me with the prob of still having a crappy tranny that wouldnt handle it, and my AEG can only handle 14 psi max probably, just not a good platform.

That may be true, I don't know. The Neuspeed supercharger kit doesn't require a tranny change and the output is comparable to a stock 1.8T. Probably not many running out there to get a good sampling of the longevity of the tranny.
But I agree, why not do it right and put in the beefier components while you're at it. Or better yet, sell the car and buy a used 1.8T.

...or just be happy with what you have

I went back and forth with the idea of swapping or supercharge.... in the end, I decided to just leave well enough alone... It's ONLY when I am in someone's GTI 1.8t that I long for the faster engine... Oddly enough, the 2.slow feels faster than it actually is for the most part (that feeling means a lot)... I guess the gearing with the 5-speed helps but it just feels faster than it is... hard to explain I guess..
AND I honestly like having a car I can dump regular cheap gas into

Ya I admit it does feel faster than it is, but that only leads to embarrasing and depressin hp numbers at the dyno and 1/4 times at the track. Its a blast to drive though. I admit as well that my roommates 1.8t with tons of bolt ons, probably near 190 whp was a little motivation for more hp. But I am already past the cheap gas thing, with the cam, gear and chip i have to put 91 in as it is. I just spent 30 bucks on a tank about 15 min ago. But i never spend any money on clothes or decent food or going out anyways, so to me good gas and some hp is all the fun i need.

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (Neu Bug)

Ok the Vr is looking like its gonna go through. My last concern is that its coming with the whole front brake setup, spindles carriers rotor and all, and axles.... but will the axles be too long or short, Im not lucky enough that these are gonna bolt righ in am I, because I dont think i would want to swap the axle flanges and use my 02J axles, doubt they will hold the vr power....
Any insight.....

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (Neu Bug)

GGRRRRR.... There is nothing wrong with VR's transfering power through a 100mm flange.. just change the inner joints and your fine.. the acxles are the same length

Re: Anyone done, or know anyone who has put a 1.8t in a 2.0 beetle? HELP (CountBlah..)

Ok well with that answered, I came across this...
"one-piece wiring harness.
Some mk2 and all mk3 have what's called Central Electric 2 (CE2). The big thing about CE2 is that all wiring harnesses plug into the fuse block, and all are separable from each other. Lots of little harnesses...and all are compatible with each other. That's why you can take a mk3 12v VR6 and put it in a mk2. It just works.
The mk4, on the other hand, doesn't work that way. Not only is the wiring NOT modular, and the fusebox CAN'T be disconnected from the harness(es), but there are about a billion other things that happened from the mk3 to the mk4 as well. Including the immobilizer. I'm pretty sure the electronic immobilizer is partially responsible for the 1-piece wiring harness in the mk4."
IS this guy right or is the engine harness seperate (modular), I have been told both. As I see it this is the last thing i could see going wrong with this swap going ahead.
If he is right cant I track down the leads from my fusebox and splice the wires from the VR6 harness into my fusebox, not connecting the option that I do not have available. And just leave the rest of my harness alone to operate all my other stuff like headlights and mirrors etc..

A4 to A4 is a plug n play swap which is why I told you if you go 12V it needs to be from an a4.. not a3.. because of CEII

This is a 24v VR, still plug and play into my car. Trust me Derek I take your word over most others, you really know your Shizt. I know you must be getting annoyed with me by now but I do appreciate it.
edit, that was a horribly stupid question of course a 24v would be an A4, I take it back. Ok then I think I am going ahead with this, hes gonna drive the thing down to me pretty soon.
