This regards an 86 Golf GTI…
The car was running fine all day, stopped for lunch and when I returned to my car it would turn over but not fire.
The next day I hoped in turned the key and it fired up but idled high. On the way home it would stall and I would have to pop it. I replaced the fuel distributor, fired it up and fond it to be more responsive but if I took my foot off the gas it would stall. I tried to move it but after it stalled this time it would turn over but not fire.
I fired it up today but if I took my foot off the gas it would stall under 16o rpms.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like a spark issue. Try plugs and wires first. they are easy and fairly cheap. If that doesn't do it, post again.
Possible cloged injectors. Try a can of injector cleaner in the fuel.
When was the fuel filter replaced?

Check ALL of your grounds. 16v's and problems are usually brought together by 1 of 2 things... Bad Grounds, or vaccuum leaks.
I dont think you have a fuel issue based on whats given, pull a spark plug plug it into the plug wire and ground it on the intake manifold to check for spark as you turn the car over. (dont worry it wont create some cataclysmic explosion, just a little spark). If you've got spark there, you'll know you have spark. If not, check to see that your hallsender is in good shape, and pull off the dist cap and check to see that you're making good connection at all the terminals.
