i am considering building my golf into a road course racer and was wondering who has built a mk2 for this purpose before? what kind of setup as far as suspension, braking, and powertrain did you have? also what kind of results did you get and where they what you expected or wanted? i plan on going to cws tuning when i have a reasonable amount of funds.

first step should be to buy a rulebook from whichever sanctioning body you will be racing with and read through it. pick a class and build the car to those specs/rules. check out your local racing scene to see what cars are successful where so you dont end up in a class where you cant be competitive.

You mean for track days or actual SCCA/NASA events? My MKII was built with roadrace/ track days in mind but not to meet any class rules. The biggest thing was to get enough tire under the car. I have the full Neuspeed suspension with race springs/ bilstein sports, 25mm F / 28mm R sway bars, upper stressbar w Autotech lower stress bar, VR6 strut mounts, ditched the rear Neuspeed bar and put in a roll bar, VWMS control arm bushings, Autotech camber bolts and upgrade to Corrado 11in brakes. Then stuffed 225/45/16's with 8mm F & 20mm spacers in the R. It's a pretty good set up.

BTDT - twice. If this is your first foray into road racing, I'd strongly suggest that you purchase an existing racecar - while this isn't as fun and exciting as building one from scratch, it saves lots of headaches and is much less expensive in the long-run.
If you're set on spending 2 to 3 times the amount of money, follow the advice that was already provided and get the rules for your sanctioning body. While you're at it, goto some of the races for that sanctioning body so you'll get a flavor for what you're getting ready to do. Be aware that your "baby" will get trashed at some point so the tub has to be a throwaway - in other words, don't build your pristine, 25K mile 16v GTi into a racecar and expect it to survive without a plethora of dents and dings.
My car is setup for SCCA's ITA (Improved Touring) class. That having been said, the only real modifications on the car are suspension - Ground Control coilovers, Konis and camber plates. The brakes are stock with the exception of no backing plates and Hawk Blue pads. Motor mods are tightly restricted - the motor is rebuilt but there are no mods except for a TT race header.
Did it get me where I expected? Yes - the car places squarely in the middle of the pack. Did it get me where I wanted? No - I'd have preferred to win.
