Just curious, does anyone understand rally notes or lingo for that matter. I know that much of it deals with distance, speed and time to each corner. But at the same time, it amazes me that they are understanding the notes for 3-5 turns ahead if that is what I understand.
I was watching the latest Best Motoring International and they brought Peter Solberg and his co driver Mills with his Tarmac 2003 Impreza WRC car to Japan. They were driving in the Gunma Motorcycle park like they normaly do for their battles. But it was interesting to see Solberg go over the course and quote pace notes to his co-driver then run the course full bore in the WRC class Subaru.

its easy.
1-6 is mostly used for the intesity of a corney, each team decides if 1 is major or 6 is major.
the numbers like 50, 100, 200, are in meters, and thats the distance to the next command, so if its 200, you know its a bit of a straight.
they might say, "left 4 dont cut slippy outside into right 2 cut 50"
this means its a level 4 corner to the left, and not to cut the corner, but that the outside of the corner is slippery, maybe large mud or grass. then into (right after the left hander) a level 2 right turn, and to cut that corner to save time , then 50 is 50 meters to the next thing
there is also crest, gully, etc, but each team kinda sets their own parameters. as far as understanding ahead, its just teamwork and getting used to your co-driver. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

It amazes me each time to see how the driver can decipher and undestand the co-driver so precisely to follow the course as fast as on car vs just going by ones driving insticts. But then the notes allow one to set up for each turn to approach at max speed and optimal entry and exit.

Yup, I guess that's why there are only a dozen people that get up to WRC.
Incredible. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

last year at Pikes Peak, one of the teams did have a navigator...they had to setup the pace notes during the practice runs
Sometimes, they throw in angles, such as "Left 90"....
If the curve gets smaller radially..."tightens"
and so on. They also refer to landmarks also as necessary.
Do some Time-speed-distance rallies as both driver and navigator to pick it up a bit.

For some teams the number is the gear, so L 4 into R 2 would be a 4th gear laft hander followed by a 2nd gear right hander.

Did anyone else see that little promo on Speed where they quized one of the WRC drivers by reading him random pace notes from his navigator and he had to correctly identify the course and stage, which he did so successfully? Pretty nifty. Shows how much practice goes into being a driver at that level.

I have that BM DVD, it's amazing to see Petter at work "un-cut" vs all the Speed TV edits.

Petter is the man. He and Marcus are my current favorites. You know the group is the elite when you only have to say the person's first name and everyone knows who you're talking about.

I miss the old Colin McRae though... and Nicky Grist in the other seat - his notes in his accent were the greatest.

yea, I forgot about that. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
there are a lot of other terms used...crest, tightens, narrows, opens, etc. But ya its just a matter of developing the link betwee driver and co-driver. They can only be so good, the rest has to be the ability to work as a team.
