One was at the shop today and the owner let me take it for a little spin around the block after we changed the oil-man was it fun! Great little car. I barely fit, and Im 6 foot 1, but I could drive on everyday. Nice short clutch travel, and I love the shifter. Great little car, I drove it with the soft top on so its kinda cramped but overall, makes me really want one!
Revs kinda quick too, I like!

Re: Just Drove a '99 Miata (Ajlepisto)

I certainly wouldn't want techs driving my cars after they change my oil... http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
Good thing I don't trust my vehicle to techs for simple maitenance and write down the mileage before I put them in for any service that doesn't requre drivability... http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

I was fine with FWD econo-based sport compacts until I started autocrossing a Miata 2 years ago. Despite having about 1/2 the HP of my GTI, I was ruined. My next car will be a RWD convertible.

Was it an automatic?

Yes, with a "short clutch travel." It's the worlds first automatic with a clutch!

You have the wrong tech (or none at all as the case would be)...

You being 6'1, try driving one with a stick.....

I'm 6' 2" and I fit perfectly fine in my 5-spd NA, which is considerably smaller than the NB which he drove. I think everyone's opinions about Miatas being insanely small inside is pretty biased, meaning that if you step out of a Jetta that would accommodate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the utmost ease and into a Miata where your legs sit differently, one doesn't realize that just because your legs are bent slightly and the ergonomics are tighter that you still have plenty of room. I think that was the longest sentence ever.

Re: Just Drove a '99 Miata (Ajlepisto)

I recently rented a 2003 Miata (my car was in the body shop, don't ask).
My girlfriend has a 1990 so it was cool to compare the two. The new one had the following noticeable features that the 90 doesn't: power windows, power locks, a remote trunk release, leather, non-flipup headlights, more room in the trunk, and a good stereo.
Other than that, the driving experience is the same as the 90. I think the new ones are a bit wider (the doors seem thicker). The differences are subtle, with the most noticeable one being the windblocker (which you can add to the old ones), rigidity with the top down due to a rear stress bar (which you can add to the old ones) stereo (which could also be cured on the older ones). The driving experience, however, is pretty much the same, as long as you don't have the top down. The new ones are no faster (they have a bigger engine but are heavier) nor do they handle any better.
The point of my rant is that dollar for dollar, I would rather buy an old Miata. Crank windows and non-power locks rule, because they don't break. The less electronics there are, the easier it is for a shadetree mechanic to work on. My girlfriend has put 12k miles on her car (it now has 118k miles), and it has needed nothing but oil changes. It does not leak a drop of oil or use any coolant. The car runs like a top and it amazes me.

NA's have more interior room then NB's. There's more elbow room, and more leg room.

That is freaky. I could not even shift it into reverse, becasuse it was soooo tight in there.

I think it is all in your personal seating position...I'm 6'1 and I have no problems
