Of course I find this when I am already buying another car. But I might be able to get a friend of mine to front the money for the thing. Why am I considering replacing 1 problematic GTI with 2 VW's that need work???? I hope the meds kick in soon....

Anyway... Older guy claims to be getting rid of it for his sister who is sick of her son getting tickets. That tells me it may be beat on. He says that it just needs a starter to be road worthy, so no road test. The breaks look good. Cosmetically the car looks pretty good. There is some minor rust around the rear passenger fender, the sunroof looks like it doesn't quite close, clean interior. The engine looks pretty clean. No obvious oil leaks or oil in the coolant tank.
How can you tell if the charger is going? I know common practice with g60's is to rebuild any charger that you dont know about. I am assuming I could tell if it was completely gone because the car would run like a dog, but are there tell tale signs of coming death?
Could this possibly be a good deal? ARG!! I think I really just want to hear someone tell me to stay away... but the thought of a G60 second car is gnawing at me.
I am taking all opinions TIA

never underestimate the obvious. The key cylinder to the solenoid on the starter is very common, and the reason i got one of my cars from a dealer cheap. Price to fix the electrical issues: $500 plus from his "buddy electrician". Told the dude i'd take it for xxxx including tax tag n title. He said be hear by 3pm with cash or its going to the auction with the rest of the crap cars.
lol.
had to put the boost tubes back on and limp it to my bro's house but it was a fun car. a thermostat, motor mount, and push button start, and R134a conversion and it was a champ.

hmmm. Interesting point. I know this is possible, but I have never 'jumpered' a starter. How is this done without frying myself?

Re: $800 g60.... (GTI Greenhorn)

Find a screwdriver with a heavily insulated handle and jump the solenoid to ground. There's two possible posts to hit, one will spin you forward and one will spin backwards.
Just make sure you're not in gear.
Buy the car man, I'll give $1000 for the G60 conversion and the interior.

Re: $800 g60.... (speediG60)

It's not going to hurt anything that I know of, the gear only grabs the flywheel when it spins one direction, if you're spinning the other way nothing it going to mesh.
I could be wrong but I mean, 24 hours with of cranking time, even it going backwards did hurt it couldn't be that bad
