Re: Anyone ever stuble upon something Rare? (SchweetMk2)

When we found our house, the realtor was giving us the initial walkthrough, and I found a car in the garage, under a tarp and a bunch of junk. Turned out to be a late 60's Mustang Fastback, in beautifully original, if somewhat neglected, condition. Not a special edition or anything, just a nice original car. The best part was, it had 9k on the clock. Apparently the husband of the couple bought it upon his retirement, and kicked the bucket not a year later. She parked it in the garage and never opened the doors again.
20 yrs later, I'm sure I was the next guy to sit in it.
We bargained hard for them to include the car in the sale of the house, but apparently grandma had promised it to the grandson, and he wanted to turn it into a hotrod.

When we did final walkthrough, all that was left of it was scrape marks on the concrete where they dragged it onto a flatbed......

Just bought a 1993 Jaguar XJ6(XJ40) for $500. Lady said that it wouldn't start and had sat for a year before she decided to simply get rid of it. A jump start and 5 gallons of gas later......I drove it home,

Re: (FlatGTI)

Not too far from my house, there's a very ghetto car lot with an early-50s Mercedes Benz wagon sitting for sale, having been unsold now for at least two years. I think they want about $750 for it.
Oh...so...tempted.
Edit: Just did some research on it.
Turns out it's actually from the late-60s, but VERY rare--only 2754 made between 1964 and 1969.
What would one do with a wagon like that anyway?

Re: (bgluckman)

You have no idea.
Citroën SM in a tow truck yard?
Mazda Cosmo (1968) at a local garage?
Lancia Gamma at a repair shop?
Shelby GT-350 in a junkyard?
All stuff that I've come across and either bought or thought about it.
Just the tip of the iceburg really, I'm good at finding stuff like this.

Not rare, but a helluva deal...
I was at a race with the 510 and was working on changing the jets on the carbs. A spectator wandered by and said, 'Webers huh? I have a set in my garage I need to get rid of - you interested?' Hells yeah! A week later he delivered a set of two Weber DCOE 45's with intake manifold for $25!!

Re: Anyone ever stuble upon something Rare? (SchweetMk2)

Do I? Routinely.

One of (allegedly) 12 E23 745i with an original 5-speed manual transmission. Didn't buy it though.
One of two 1990 Dodge Caravan ES turbo 5-speeds, I'm told.
An '89 Subaru GL-10 turbo 4wd 5-speed sedan (these came in so many configureations that they're basically all "rare")
And a whole mess of SPGs (limited production) and most recently one of 109 Green '91 SPGs etc.
I've sort of hoped to parlay this talent into somewhat more valuable things like perhaps vintage cars or even just real estate. No luck yet

Re: Anyone ever stuble upon something Rare? (SchweetMk2)

Saw a GM EV1 being driven down the street (nowhere near anything GM-related) some time after the date when supposedly all of the leases were up (and non-renewed).
Of course, you could probably order something rare. Like a 2005 Ford Focus wagon with the (fleet only) power equipment delete option and a (unlikely to be chosen by real fleets) manual transmission (if you can get a Ford dealer to order you a fleet of one).
If anyone ever finds one of the two or four 1998 Passat TDIs sold in the US, I'm sure the TDIClub would like to read the story.

my buddy has a 2004 (or maybe 2003) focus, 5 speed, no power options.....but it's a hatch. is that still rare?

Heres a whole site dedicated to it

As for finding them, I never quite have the luck, people won't sell, and when they will they want outrageous prices for them. However my and my dad did manage to swing a car with a hemi in it for the price of a computer

Re: (MattMarchand)

My car broke down one day in the sticks, and I asked to use a guys phone. When waiting for the tow truck He showed me a '65 Mustang fastback with 46k that had been sitting in his garage since 1975! Strait as an arrow, mint chrome, mint interior, no rust, a new paint job and it would have been a show winner. Rare in this part of the country at least.

How about a 1981 Scirocco, damn near mint condition, lady driven, automatic, dealer serviced at the same dealer for 23 years, then traded in at that same dealer.
Then bough by me

I saw some super-old guy driving a scirocco of about that vintage today, looked like it was in perfect shape - i bet the guy bought it new and has just driven it around the area, wish i could stalk him until the day he kicks the bucket http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
