Hey guys, just trying to get some user feedback here. For those of you that don't know I've recently stumbled across a swallowtail rear pan for my 83 GTI. Considering I've all ready cut out the old pan, I definitly need a replacment. I was offered $300 for it with a replacement. But upon holding it up to my car I've kinda fallen in love with the darn thing.

What should I do???

I think putting a swallowtail panel on a NON-Swallowtail is just plain stupid.
It's like the people who put Oval windowns in big window Beetle.
There are soooo many differences between a '83 and a Swallowtail, it's ridiculous!
Sell the damn thing and make your car correct!

Speaking of correct and you call your 82 Pick Up a Caddy?
I say do what ya want with it. I am sure there isn't a swallowtail out there that has been rear ended and needs a replacement rear panel and is worth doin.

I think for the money offered, stick another back panel on. If the money means nothing, then use the one you have.
But you'll keep pointing it out to people who won't know what you're talking about...

It's in your hands

you went to the trouble to find it and buy it then you should be able to enjoy it! if you like it put it on! are you supposed to bubble wrap it and put it in your closet only to look at once or twice a year! weld it up, put some biddy little tails on it and drive the thing!

Re: My swallowtail delima! (justinvw84)

paint it up, add tail lights , plate lights and a plate and hang it on the wall in your den. over your bar http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: My swallowtail delima! (LubsDaDubs)

Well, I will weigh in, because I am the one that offered him the money. Obviously, if I offered him 300 bucks for it, I want it. However, I do not want it as a replacement for my car (mine is fine).
I have spent a significant amount of time over the last few years researching the early cars, and spent a lot of time putting up the Swallowtail.info site. I have actually gotten a lot of grief for doing that, because it has in essence raised the value of early cars by making them more desirable. Without the site (and all the "to do" around Swallowtails it created) few people would even notice this.
If I wind up with the rear panel for a fair price (I would say that offering someone 7 times what he paid, plus shipping, and offering to find him a spot to buy another one is a pretty fair price), it will not be welded on a car. It will go on the wall of my house, professionally painted, and preserved.
However, I have no interest in making this a bidding war, or hurting feelings. The panel is his to do with what he chooses. I made an offer to give it a good home, and feel that it is too rare a piece to weld on to anything but an all out no expense spared show car. Let's put it this way.... I have two swallowtails, both of which are perfectly rust free CA cars, straight as an arrow. I have sunk SERIOUS money into the one I am restoring (I am not talking 5K, either.... plenty more than that), and I would NEVER consider welding this to that car. It is simply too rare, and too interesting a piece of VW history.
My offer is on the table and he can do with it what he chooses.
Thanks! Dan

For the owner of the panel...keep it. Appreciate it for what it is.
Even as a swallowtail owner, is it really that big a deal folks? Sure I appreciate that I have one of the few remaining '75s with a sunroof but come on guys. The ass of the car isn't going to make you enjoy your car any less or any more. Sure it may be a lot more rare but it surely will not change the way the car drives. Regardless if my car was a 1975 swallowtail or a 1976 non-swallowtail it still doesn't stop the fact that I'm pouring money into a car that few appreciate to begin with (outside the VW realm) but you know what? It makes me happy no matter what year it is.
Honestly keep the panel. Maybe some day somebody that has a swallowtail might really need it. Accidents happen. It doesn't belong on a wall or in a museum. Dan, no offense.

Alright,
I called Showcars bodyparts, and they have the lower half of that panel (the "roll pan") for $31.12. They don't have the rear license plate part, but that could be cut off any car, as that part doesn't rust like the roll pan does.
I am still working on a brand new one of those (the whole piece), though. I have a few irons in the fire, and people are working on getting back to me.

None taken, my firend!
Like I said before, I'd like to have it, made my offer, and am not going to cry myself to sleep if I don't get it.
