Japanese reliabilty: Here is an exercise for anyone game.
Visit the local or any Japanese brand dealership and see how many parts/service departments are closed due to lack of business.
They don't stay in business doing oil and filter changes?
To date not one person has proven this. Myth!

See the nameplate rankings near the end of this page. Look at virtually every customer satisfaction or quality survey and you'll find a familar name near, or at, the bottom of the list. On the other hand, the Japanese manufacturers will mostly cluster near the top.

Re: Is the Toureg full of problems? (vwoflanghorne)

I think it is silly to assume that just because the service department is in business that the cars (i.e. Hondas) must be having an inordinate (or even an average) number of problems.
Manufacturers have dealership standards, and (correct me if I'm wrong), I believe one of these standards is that the dealership maintain an operational service department for customers. I've never heard of a dealership where they tell you "sorry, our cars our too well made--business sucked for the techs so now we can't help you".
VWs arent as reliable as Hondas or Toyotas. It isn't a diss--it's a fact. In addition, new Toyotas, Hondas, and Lexus/Acuras all have curtain airbags (in the mid to upper models) electronic traction control systems, DVD Nav (as an option), ABS, Electronic Climate Control, and every other whiz-bang item you can think of. I can assure you that a new honda accord/acura with all the options checked is more complex than a GLS new beetle.
VWs are more fun to drive, have more character, and elicit more positive emotions from their devotees. This is why I have one myself. If I wanted a reliable car, I wouldn't have gotten one. I expected (rather anticipated) the significant likelihood that my Touareg would have its share of problems. If a friend were to ask me if he could expect problems when buying a Touareg, I would definitely say yes. To say otherwise I believe would be dishonest.
I can live with problems in exchange for a car that I'm attached to. Others cannot. That is why it is important to be honest, and let people decide from there. To say VWs are just as reliable as Japanese cars or that the Touareg is not likely to have issues is, in my opinion (with all that we faithful owners know), a lie.

darylhuff.
J.D. Power bases it's findings on The First Three Months of Ownership.
Is VW on the lower end of the scale?
Yes, but so is Porsche.
It's worth repeating even though there have been justifications posted on Japanese Service Departments and their existence. In my opinion supporting the myth.
Any of them closed today due to lack of business?
Keep this quiet...Are Honda/Acura transmissions from model year 99 and up being replaced?
Anyone heard of this. Or just another myth?

Porsche is down solely because of the Cayenne! If you look at the sports car list the 996 (911) is top three.
I'm getting rid of my Touareg, not because of the gremlins, which I can deal with, but because of two breakdowns in 10 months. Just can't deal with that level of unreliability.

Re: Is the Toureg full of problems? (Rob in CT)

I don't know if "full of problems" is totally accurate, but the Touareg had enough funky little quirks and problems that I just didn't feel like putting up with it any more. Too bad, because I will admit it was a fun car to drive and had a killer interior. However, since off-roading is not an issue for me, (if it was, I'd have nothing less than a Wrangler), I adore my Denali and smile every time I get in it.
A buddy of mine told me to never buy a 1st year car. I shoulda listened to him and I would've saved many $$$ keeping the Treg only 9 mos and trading it.

I've owned plenty of first year cars, and this is the worst of the bunch. My 3 year old Avalanche is an early VIN, first year truck, and it hasn't been in the shop for anything but oil. The oil changes don't cost $200 either

It's coming off lease soon, so I'll be saying good bye.
As much as I like my Touareg, it won't be in my garage for 3 years. The only reason I still have it is the dry summer lets me ride Motorcycles 95% of the time. I think the T has more miles to/from the dealers than other driving this summer. Too bad Chevy interiors and handling don't come close to the VW.
