I was just watching MotorWeek and learned a very interesting little fact about Porsche. After the 356's body style was to be redesigned, Porsche named the new body style the "901" but Peugot claimed all ownership to 3 digit numbers with the number "0" in the middle of it...so Porsche named the new body style the "911". Just had to share since the "911" was and still is such a huge part of Porsche and its history on the track and off. Just had to tell someone.

Re: Did you know...I didnt!! (TwinkleToez)

I wondered if MAzda was sued when they named their Mazda 808 (an RX-3 with regular engine) in the 70s.

stupid question, i think it was touched upon before in the C.L. what happens when they run out of 3 digit designations starting with "9" as for many years they have been trying to get the market to accept the cars in the "911" linage as "carerra's" yet people still call them the generic "911" or refer to them as 993,996 etc. ?

They've got a huge chunk of 9 numbers that were never used.

"Everybody get down
make no mistake
nothing sounds quite like an 8 0 8"
Yes I knew about the 901 thingy.

This is why most of the early 911 part numbers begin with 901.
And you can tell uprated 911 parts based on part numbers too.
Chain tensioners and cam covers begin with 930....

thats pretty interesting too...so they still decided to use the 901 # for something at least. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

it's pretty difficult to "claim ownership" to a common word or number....
if by "ownership" one means trademark status, .... well, it's still pretty tough.......

Didn't Volvo have to change their naming scheme (i.e. 850 --> S70, 960 --> S90) due to a dispute with Audi?

930 is the identification code of the 930 chassis which is the pre Carrera 2/4 911 turbo. 964 is the Carrera 2/4, 965 Carrere 2/4 turbo and so on...
Partnumbers made for a model start always with the chassis identification number
