This is like the fourth time I've come to the fellow 'Texers for help. I promise I'll shut up and get a car soon. I need a replacement for my (hopefully) soon to be sold Scoob. I need a reasonable efficient, very reliable daily driver that is fun to toss around and somewhat moddable. Handling in very high on my priorites list. As is a good "feel" (I admit it, I'm a dash stroker!

My cap is anything up to about $20k. I was looking at SVT Foci and really liking the performance and handling for the money. It would require little tuning to make it ideal. Also playing with various Mini spec levels to get a decent car- but I'm worried about stuff falling off them.
Also thinking certified used... something... any anniversary GTi's out there on the certified market?
I just don't want another Subaru. My wife's outback is great, but I've been turned off to them by the performance of mine.
Your wonderfully creative thoughts are always welcome!

Well... I have no positive insight, however, I do have to ask ya, what's the deal on your RS?
I'm casually in the market for one (sometime in the next 6 months) but if one (ie yours

) comes up I'm acting on it.

or an 04 WRX wagon because you can get those out the door for about 20k right now. i thought once you went Subaru you never go back.

Yeah, I do. If you got turned off by the performance of an Outback and a 2.5 RS, you got turned off for the wrong reason by the wrong machines.

My wife's Outback is great, we use it for camping and biking etc. It feels good and solid and is very reliable and quite nice to drive- esp on long trips.
I just don't want another Scoob for myself as I don't like the feel of them. Yeah, the WRX is a pretty good car (with the exception of the gearbox troubles) and they have cult status in performance circles but I would rather have something different. Plus, I hate Subaru customer service.

I worry about the overall reliability and build quality. But I have really not had enough insight from owners to form a true opinion on it. I do really like the cars, I just don't know enough about their long term durability. How has yours been?

Well it could be yours for a reasonable $8k or less... but since you're in the car lounge and I don't like doing bad things to good people, I'd stay away from it. I'll find a local sucker like myself to buy it.
Oh, everything works just fine, it runs and handles great, but it makes a couple of noises from the transmission that I don't particularly like. And I'm trying to get a few things squared away (like brakes) before I sell it. So, if you can find one that's nice in your area, go for it. But I would be happy to sell you mine if you really wanted one!

There was a perfect one in the area... silver, 01, 4dr, 5-speed with 30k on it. Basically, the way I want it. As soon as I saw the add I contacted the guy, only to find out it sold

Like was said before, a Miata seems to fit your bill pretty well. Reliable, efficient, fun to toss around, easy to mod.
Couple of possible Cons
-Could you live with a Miata in CT Winters?
-I don't know how it holds up to your dashstroking stanards
-Is extreme storage space a big factor?
rule#1

Of course if the whole Miata in the CT Winter thing bothers you, just pick up one of these
