Anybody with a W8 tip-tronic ever thought about doing a transmission swap to the manual 6 speed??
Any idea about the cost and effort and if it would have to be done by VW to be coverd under warranty??
This is more a question for the future. Nothing I am thinking about doing right now but 6 speeds sure might be fun.
Cheers!

6 speed envy, I have it too... Except when I am sitting in traffic for an hour and a half, then I love my tip.
To answer your question though, I am sure it can be done if you want to spend the $$ nor would I see VW warranting the work

Good luck finding a donor trans, we 6 spreed owners love our cars.

Luckily it's the same 6-speed as the S4, so they aren't that hard to find. Definately not a warranty item...

Hmmm. Let's see.. Find a 6 speed trans, pedal assembly, wiring harness, ecu, master cylinder, slave cylinder, etc then installing it all.... You could buy a new 6 speed.....

Find a 6 speed trans,

From what I understand, DSY trannies go for about $3000 on eBay quite often.

pedal assembly,

Same pedal assemble as in any other standard Passat, or most liekly A4's and A6's too. Would have to confrim on ETKA for hte part numbers, but I'm sure they're similar

wiring harness,ecu,

Not needed for a standard trany. You'd be pulling out the ECU and wire harness for your current tiptronic

master cylinder,slave cylinder,etc

same comment as with pedal cluster. They're out there in numbers in many other B5's and Audi's. Don't forget shifter linkage, shifter boot and cover, and what I don't know is if the instrument cluster needs to be swapped for one from a cluster from a manaul car or if a VAG-COM can reprogram the original cluster to not show the auto/Tip gear selection on the bottom of the display area. I think its the latter.

True, its a costly indever, but I bet it would be done for $5000 if you did it yourself. The guy who imported the V6 TDI/6 speed man paid $11,000 for all of that work (a DIYer). I bet the V6 TDI parts cost more than half of that $11,000. I don't think buying a new 6 speed would be cheaper, but this modification is not for the faint-of-heart.
Most certainly a consideration, especially for V6 4Motion guys. I am considering a purchase of a pre-owned 4Motion and then saving up to do this swap myself. Not sure if I'll go that route, but I don't see myself living with an auto for ever

some quick searching found this guy (a vortex member).

His website shows tranies for sale. After some reading, it seems the 6spd from an RS4 would be cool as the torsen diff is slightly different than standard and allows 80:20 torque biasing. Cool eh! All yours for only $3800!!! I ber this guy would help you with how to swap it in too.

I'm not sure if this is entirely correct. When I had my motor replaced, I learned that there are two different wiring harnesses. One for auto and one for manual. I'm not sure how extensive the difference is, but it is relegated to the wiring on the engine & trans (obviously).

Re: W8 Transmission Swap?? (gezuvor)

You know, I think you are right. I was doing some more research today and discovered this same fact. The auto's have different throtle bodies were the re is a position sensor for throtle that sends input back to the trany ECU. The motor ECU looked different too

That sucks. More parts to add to the list.
