Hey Guys,
I haven't been in this forum very much or at all acctually so Hi.
I bought a G60 Corrado a few years back and have been using it for cruising out to my cottage during the summer weekends. The engine is in good order and has never giving me a major problem until my trip home on Sunday.
I got whithin 50 km's of my house when all of a sudden I heard a loud rattle from under the hood. So I pulled over and popped the hood and to my amazment saw a 4 inch by 2 inch hole at the top of the charger

I was out in the middle of nowhere so I pryed out as much of the loose broken metal that was rattling in the charger with a screw driver I had with me. I accepted that it was toast and at part of me was somewhat happy that I will have to get something new and improved as a replacement to the old Grenade60. I now understand how it got that nick name.
So after pulling out some shards of metal I fired her up and continued on. I got another 30km's and the engine stalled. When I inspected it further I found out that the chunks of G in the charger had wedged together and locked up the engine. Instead of trying something drastic I had it towed home.
So my first question might be. Anyone know the reason why it blew or what likely caused it to fail?
I WILL HAVE LOTS OF PICTURES TOMORROW!!!
Also,
I bet this has happened to other G60 owners. What did you guys use as an affordable replacement? I do not want another G60 charger, I would like something better. I have about a month to get this thing back on the road.
Can you point me to some vendors?
Can I see some engine bay shots of your replacements and also see the specs on what you replaced with?
Thansk in advance fellas

Re: My Weekend: The G60 exploded on the highway story.. (maxxam)

Hi
I had a similar explosion on my Mk2, and it was due to a broken auxiliary belt. The charger was destroyed, but the engine intact. And also the Rallye, but it was even rarer, as it desintegrated, but the belt was perfect!! There was no displacer inside of it, it was all on the intercooler!
Replacement? For the first one, 1 year of storage, deciding what to do with it, and for the Rallye a new charger, until I get the Lyshom

small timing belt on charger, cost like 10 bucks, if it goes bad it cost alot more

I figured it would be the timing belt since I had replaced it in at least 5 years.

Now about replacement options....

Most who have will recommend that you get the silencer kit too if you want to be able to hear yourself think while you drive

.
Make sure you remove the intercooler and all boost tubes to clean out all of the metal.

Ouch, that's the really bad news. So how messed up is your engine?

And who want to hear himself??? The more intelligent thing I could hear is.... Don't overtake here, brake earlier...all that silly stuff! noiseeeeeeeee!! At least, it's my choice (and it's also LESS expensive)
I'm tired of having a grenade under my bonnet

I really don't have any idea how messed the engine is. But I do know there are metal shavings all over my engine bay. The pics I take tonight will show a little more detail.
So far all I've looked at was the Bahnbrenner kit. It's a bit pricy but it seems to be a quality product. If I went with that one there is no way I could afforn the silencer any time soon.
I have a $2500 CDN budget and it's listed $2499 USD by the looks of it. I will shop around and see what else is available.
Who sells the Lysholm charger that I hear so much about. Are they comparable?

The BBM is a/the Lysholm.
As far as the engine, if you tried to run after the charger tossed her load, then charger itself likely locked up and stalled the motor. This is what happened to me in a previous life. Take the serpentine belt off and the hose to the throttle body (so you don't suck in any metal - Just in case) and start it up to satisfy. A quick idle should tell all.
...or do a compression test if you want.

That's basically why it locked up the engine. I pryed another piece out of the charger and freed it up enough to get it idling. Theegnine sounds heathly.

I'm thinking of cutting the belt or removing it so I can limp it to my mechanics.

I would of just towed the car the moment it blew up the charger. Keep in mind that the little metal pieces are flying into your motor.don't cause anymore damage then what you allready got!! You risk a blown engine if you keep driving it!!!

Re: (BLK KNGHT)

Lysholm is a nice option to go with!! But it also put me in jail for a night!

It is the best supercharger to go with!!! ask anybody who has one!! But it takes to long to make power! Thats why you should just buy a turbo kit!!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (BLK KNGHT)

It looks like I've decided to go with the BBM kit.
$2499 US for the kit
$399 US for the BOV package
$80 US for the upgrade pulley to 15psi
they say that they are behind on orders for these.

Very nice, love the Rallye http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
So what do you think about the system? Any regrets? Is the car noticably more powerful than the G60?
