Re: 1999.5 GTI (rs4-380)

There were no DBC VR6 MKIV's, only early 2.0's.

This is actually not correct, and I can't believe more people don't know about this.
There were a VERY small number of DBC MKIV 1999.5 12v VR6 GTIs (not Jettas interestingly enough) that were sold in America. One of the guys i know who is now a BMW Fanatic (has a E46 M3 and a modified M Coupe) used to be a VW Fanatic. He works for a local VW dealership.
We they got their first shipment of MKIV GTIs in early 1999, He snatched up the first one.
What was interesting was that it was Drive by Cable, and it had no ASR, AND it WAS a GLX (I saw the registration, and it had climatronic and every other option).
The reason we know it was DBC was because in 2000 when I got my 12v we all met at Dubwerks at their grand opening and UPsolute was doing chipping.
For the life of them, Upsolute couldn't get the standard 1999.5 12v software to work with David's car (David is the guy with the DBC MKIV VR6). After hours and hours, and numerous phone calls, it was discovered based upon his ecu code that David had the engine from the 1998 MKIV (yes MKIV) VR6 offered in European MKIVs when they first were released - which had DBC. Ultimately, the software for the European 1998 MKIV 12v was loaded into his ECU, and it worked. It was then further verified at the dealership he worked for that it was, indeed, drive by cable.
I have talked about 2 other people on VOrtex who were lucky enough to get DBC VR6s in their extremely early MKIV 12vs (this was a couple years ago though). The dealership he works for described the DBC MKIV VR6 as an "anomoly MKIV." One of the techs claimed to have seen a couple others over the past 3 or 4 years.
Anyway, that's the story.

Re: 1999.5 GTI (VarLordahl)

I still wouldn't compare that to an entire year and half production of DBC 2.0's.
I have never seen a DBC MKIV VR, I don't know why you think more people should be familar with it since it is, as you stated, an anomaly.
That being said, I'll put it in the folder with the cosmic green, jazz blue and double yellow Jetta's.

Yeah, i didn't mean to act as if it was something that should be common knowledge, I just was surprised that no one knew about it. Didn't mean to sound like an ass.
Anyway, I'll see if I have a picture of David's car, it was heavily modified and the first MKIV in America with the Charactere kit I believe. He sold it a couple years ago though for his M Coupe.

Cool info VarLordhal. I would never have guessed ...

BTW, I'm pretty sure that none of the early (99.5) VR6s had ASR. My 99.5 GLS VR6 doesn't have it. It may have been only available on the GLX that year, but I doubt it.
