Was wondering if anyone may help me out. Seems like every morning when i go to start my VW, it has to crank over like 3 or 4 times. Never on the 1st!! Although when warm it always starts on 1st try. Was wondering if there was somehting i can take a look at, or shall i just face the fact that its an old car. THX in advance for any suggestions.

what motor do you have? how many miles? auto/5speed?

Re: Rough morning Starts! (shortys7777)

heh, some days I have to crank mine to the point I can tell the starter is getting pissed off because it's barely turning the engine over. Usually at about that point it spudders a few times idles a little rough than smooths out. Yet there are days when it catches right away.
I've been told it's my accumulator going bad, but it's still an occational thing so I'm just going to leave it alone for now. Actually happened quite a few times recently, but I think that's because it sat for three weeks waiting for me to save up the cash for a new exhaust. But after a week of driving it daily it seems to have gone away for now.

Yeah similar situation here with the 2001 1.8t jetta. I have rough starts every morning when it's cold out. If I give it some gas it will eventually idle smooth. I asked the dealer for any suggestions and they said it could be my battery. I have had my battery and alternator checked and its all good. Also would this be something that is covered under warranty? They told me it was 90$ to check my battery. Thanks for any help, and Good luck to everyone!

Re: Rough morning Starts! (Shikaroka)

if you had said it starts hard also when hot i would say injectors but since its only when its cold im not too sure. mine had leaking injectors that would just flood the hell out of the engine on a hot day. and by the next morning it would run but had to crank with foot on floor to get fuel presure back up in the injectors. and i wanna tell you its not fun when its 95deg f outside and youre in a parking lot and it finnally starts with a huge ass cloud coming from the car.... thank god i got new injectors...

Re: Rough morning Starts! (smiththers2)

16Valves have a lot of problems when the injector body seals to the intake manifold get cracked and allow large air leaks into the intake. Once it is warm, flow some propane around the injectors and watch RPM, if it increases, that will need attention, when an engine is cold, and you have intake leaks, you are leaning it out more than it should be at a time when the engine needs to be rich. This is all assuming that your CIS-E system is adjusted to spec. which should really be the first step along with setting the timing. Followed by an injector spray pattern analysis...
Good Luck!

Re: Rough morning Starts! (Passat007)

i have the same problem aswell, due to the fact that i have hi comp forged pistons doesn't help either, i changed the starter cause my old one would skip every once and awhile and i had a feeling it was eating at my flywheel, now it always turns but it needs 3-4 cranks, then another crank with a shot of gas to get started, but once it's warm it starts right away. I was wondering if it was the "check valve in the fuel pump, cold start valve, or the thermo-time switch that operates the cold start valve." - Thnks Shikaroka. I was also thinking it could be vacuum leaks in the fuel injector o-rings. Not sure which one i should start on or even if all those checkpoints are ok but it's just cause i have forged pistons and they shrink alot in the cold. Anyone have any ideas? This is the last time my passat is going to be driven in the winter.
