Don't want the above reply to be the last thing I see tonight about this post. Very natural progression shown in the photos- from what the Golf was to what is has become. Very nice. I think the MK V's look great and I can't wait to pick one up in the near future. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Where is the other GOLF parked again?

That IV looks quite nice.

LOL!
My soon to be ex-IV is a piece of junk in comparison to what I'm getting

I do love its engine though.....but...it only puts out 75 kW. The increase to 110 kW with a weight increase of only 37 kg and 80% stiiffer body due to 160 m of laser welding should lead to a bit of fun over the Summer

Cheers,
Adam

I don't buy the "dated" arguement....VW's (especially Golf's) have always been designed very conservatively. It's a classic design that ages VERY well...that's why an MKII GTi still looks great and doesn't really look like an "old" car to the average person. You can't say the same thing about a 20 year old celica.
The MKV looks updated, but I still don't see the MKIV's as being outdated.
Either way, I can't wait to see some MKV GTi's in person...I love how they look in the pics.

Hear, Hear. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I'll take a "dated" MkII GTI ANYDAY.
Change is good...ONLY IF ITS ACTUALLY GOOD!!!!

Wow...taller and narrower. Looks more like a minivan than a sports car.

Considering that the Golf is a family car, I'd say that form is following function in this case. However, I do still prefer the MKIV. The only real problem I have with the MKV is the rear end - its huge!

It's NOT THAT BIG! Just spacious!
Does this look so scary?

Cheers,
Adam - who wished he had inserted a human being in the photos to kill the impression that this an SUV that all you guys seem to "drive"

Good size perseption, if only the MKV wasn't wider.

MKIV Golf: Height 56.7in Width 68.3in
MKV Golf: Height 58.5in Width 69.3in
And since when has the Golf ever been a sports car.

Its all about the ratios

Well a GTI is considered a sporty car, and they are basically the same chassis. I'm just perpetually nauseated by the slab sided trends in auto design (especially VAG) right now.

You've got to be kidding me, the mkV grew 1 inch in width and 1.8 inch in height. yeah that .8 throws the ratio all out of proportion
Image

The mkV looks bigger more than it really is bigger
and NO the GTi is not a sports car of any sort
Image
, that was reserved for the corrado. yes you may bring up the R32, yes it just has a big engine and AWD but that does not make it a sports car

i think the mk5 looks too much like a mini van or something, doesnt have the compact sporty look of the mk4

This is exactly my point.
For those that dont think a GTI is a sports or "sporty" car, you should come to some of the local Auto-X events.

No, because most AWD, higher HP cars are considered to be more in line with freight trucks right?

If you mean sports car in the realm of Triumph Spitfires, and Alfa Spiders then yes you are correct. I referred to the GTI as a "sporty" car. For those of us that want to drive an S2K or Miata but need to tote stuff the GTI is a great alternative. It can also be made to perform quite nicely with a few modifications.

Ummm...Not to split hairs here, but marketers do differentiate between sport and "sporty." And I believe VW specifically names the GTI a sporty hatchback to keep everyone happy. IMO, a FWD 4cyl is not a "sports" car and it would appear VW would agree.

exactly, and just because it can be badged as sports anything doesn't make it one, For example the mid 90's maximas with the badge FDSC = Four Door Sports Car- yeah right
