Hi guys,
A good friend of mine prototyped a GT28RS turbo kit for the Toyota Celica just recently, but we're wondering if something is wrong with the turbo.
We're seeing 12PSI at 3800rpm. You guys are seeing 22PSI at 3900rpm right?
We're trying to find out what the problem could be. My friend here manufactures turbo kits himself, but this is the first time he encountered a GT28RS before and worked with it.
Please take a look at these videos:
http://www.c2design.hu/celica/Videos/gas1.mpg
http://www.c2design.hu/celica/Videos/gas2.mpg
He's using a manual boost controller.... but he's gonna take it off tommorow, to see if that's the problem.
Could this be a huge boost leak? We're starting to get clueless here.

Thanks in advance!

Is comparing the celica motor a valid comparison?
We have 20 valves, celica has 16 valves.
We have compression of ~9.5:1, celica has 10:1 or 11.5:1 depending on which engine you started with.
Was the compression lowered when the kit was installed and was the bottom end built? Can the motor actually handle 20psi?

Yes, we did a complete research on the engine's airflow and it's very similar to the 1.8T.
Now, the compression has been lowered to 8.8:1, stronger rods, stronger valves, stronger valve springs, reinforcing studs. It can handle 22PSI sofar(knock on wood).
We're only at 0.8 bar right now because he's taking it easy on raising the boost(even though he went nuts one day and tried 22PSI haha).

Is that a 1ZZ-FE or a 2ZZ-FE? from the looks of that vid it looks like the turbo is working fine. If you put a EBC on it you will get a little faster spool up out of it and then you can try and up the boost that way. You will have boost spiking with a manual controller and that is not good.

1ZZ-FE. What's a EBC? Haven't heard of any boost spikes before.
BTW, our car makes 143hp without turbo. I've got the K04-06 slapped on right now and i'm doing around 200whp @ 6PSI and 255whp at 13PSI.
Should the turbo spool much faster? I remember seeing logs where they reached 14.7PSI at 3300rpm already.

Funny its just the oposite on 1.8ts. MBC delivers smoother more cocnsistant boost. Also how is an electronic boost controller going to make it spool faster? If the wastegate is closed its closed.
For the original poster, what PSI does he have his MBC set to? With mine set to 20 I see 12 psi around 3500ish and then at 3600 it shoots up very quickly. My guess is he has the MBC set to 12 psi. If not put a turn of preload on the wastegate to make sure its closed all the way. IE remove the clip off the wastegate and tighten the rod at least one full turn and try it.

Well, we're located in Europe and he wnet to bed already so can't ask. But yes, I think he set his mbc set to 12PSI. I'll send him the link tommorow so he can reply.
Thanks for the advice MRP2001GTi.
If you have any other suspisions, feel free to give your advise.

I was trying to look at your Zeitronix while you were driving. It looks like it's rich as sh!t during the time where the turbo would need to spool. Now...I'm by no means an expert, but I was under the impression that to spool the turbo, you lean things out and bump the timing to spool it, then richen up.
For instance, on my car...during spoolup I'm around 13.8-14.5 A/F...once spooled I'm stuck between 12.4-12.6. To me it almost sounds like a tuning issue. Not a turbo issue.

Im not sure of the problem with your MBC, but at 8.8:1 compression ratio it will take longer to spool that turbo than we do with stock compression 1.8T motor.

Hehe, how can you see!?? Thanks fo rthe advice, I never asked him how he tuned it. I did tell him what IMO is the best way to tune the car though. Lean while spooling, rich in higher rpm's.

is it possible that the mbc is reversed, i know my buddy would only boost 8 psi cuz the mbc was installed in the oppisite position

Most likely not possible, he has been driving with the K04 setup for over 2 years now. He takes his engine apart just for fun, wouldn't think he reversed it. But, any suggestions are welcome. Maybe he did oversee while connecting mbc to new turbo.

Yes, but this much longer!!?? I mean, i've got full boost(0.9bar) at 2700 rpm with my K04. 0.8 bar @ 3800 rpm is WAAAAYYYYY slow

Ok, thanks everyone... keep em coming. Will keep you guys updated and let you know what the problem was if we can find it.

yeah but 9 a/f ratio @ wot=black tail and tune me finger written on your tail...
is he seeing over 12psi at all??
