I think it's a 4x6 front and rear in the earlier mkIIs, my '88 has about 5" rounds in the front, and I think a 4x9 in the rear, but mine has what appear to be adapters for a 4x6 in the 4x9 spot.
You have to buy a specific fit speaker, as the 'universal fit' 4x6s have too much metal around the outside edges and don't fit.

Is '4x6 metric' how to ask at a stereo supplier?

its a euro fit. some makers have both 4 X 6, and then a euro/metric size. I bought some cheap ones to replace the stock speakers.

Boston Acoustic makes a 4x6 euro that drops right in and sounds very nice..I use BA in all my cars for their sound, durability and weather proofness.
Im currently running a 5.25" in each door with very minor trimming invloved. Im running a 120hz high pass on these since the door is a poor location for any speaker and you wont really get any frequency response below that.

Re: (OldSkoolDubbin)

I have a pair of Infinity 4x6's in the rear of my Passat that sound really nice, 6" components in the front on it. I can't recall whats in my Scirocco doors at the moment, Alpines maybe; but have replaced the rears with component speakers (JBL's) with a tweet mounted in the rear side panels.

Re: (Verbotn)

WTF??? 4x6 metric??? LOL!
First off, any 4x6 will fit, I know for a fact. The grills won't fit over aftermarket 4x6 though.
Second, 4x6 refers to 4 inches by 6 inches, NOT METRIC (duh).
I've been back and forth with the speakers in the scirocco, I know it very well. I'm currently running 5 1/4" Alpine R-series in the front (yes I modified the panel), and 6x9" Pioneer 3-way in the rear hatch panel. Everything is hooked up to a 240 watt Alpine head unit (240W peak). Lightweight and loud http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (Freerevving)

p.s., when it comes to coaxials (interior speakers), don't buy anything but Infinity. Check e-bay for some awesome deals on new Infinity speakers.
Alpine R-series coaxials are almost as good as Infinity, I had to try them because the R-series subs are so awesome but I wish I'd bought Infinity reference (sound better than Kappa, IMO). The Pioneers actually came with the car, and Pioneers are one of the top three coaxials IMO.

Sure they fit, only on the passenger side though

I'm too lazy to make the drivers side fit properly, it falls off when I close the door.
