I am goin to replace my timing belt, water pump, v-belt, etc. I currently have the green stuff for coolant. Should I convert over to the pink stuff while im at it or just stick with the green? Consequences of both, ease of switch, cost of switch??? Thanks for the help.

Re: Green or Pink? (stealth 96)

ya know this comes up every couple of weeks, and then we get different stories for each coolant type....i go with the cheap green stuff that i mix myself. Why cuz thats all that i have used and it has never failed me. you'll here people say its bad for the waterpump. If its so bad why does most do it yourselfers use it.

g12 > g11
and never use green. It eats away at our radiators. Our cars came with pink at the factory, nobody should have ever switched to green.
If it's green, do an extensive flush and get the good stuff in there ASAP http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
do a search on "coolant"

Wrong and wrong. Some of the cars have G11 from the factory. Mine does. It should say on your coolant tank what kind of collant to use. Mine says "G11", which is Green. It may be different with VR6's, but since hes replacing a "timing belt" its a 2.0. Look at your coolant bottle and go from there. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Not entirely right, chief. With a timing belt, it could be a TDI, which came with G12 (pink) coolant from the factory. The best advice, though, has already been given. Use whatever is listed on the coolant reservoir under the hood.
One Gallon of G12 undiluted is about $15 (I assume G11 would be comparably priced).

Sorry I forgot about the TDI.

later models of the 2.0 came with G12 too. Not sure when they started, sometime after 97.

One gallon of G12 costs me over $18 at the dealer. I hate it. But at least it's good for 5 years.

VW have now replaced the red (g12) and blue(g11) in Europe with a lovely lilac coloured coolant called G12+.
It can be used in any of the VAG engines and can be mixed with 11 and 12.
Same price as the G12 too!
Enjoy

G12+ can be mixed with G12, but can NOT be mixed with G11.

ok so on what part of the coolant reservoir does it say which one to use. and how much would i need to fill it up all the way after a flush?

If you look at your coolant bottle and can't see G11 or G12 in big bold print, you're missing a piece. There's a litle black plastic thing on the driver's side of the tank.
The ABA uses 6.1 quarts of mixed coolant.
The AAA uses 6.8 quarts.
