got 80k

Re: Is it common for P/S pump to go bad (AceOfSpades)

Usually, the PS outer Pulley side bearing goes before the pump. The pumps can stick after sitting for a long time or of someone used poor/incorrect fluid, run it low on fluid or replaced it and never primed it properly.
If the odo is not working then likely it was altered.

the pump spins fine but no power steering plus it does make any sound
i'll have to look at the odo it stopped at 60k but the trip works
i plan to jsut replace the pump

If the piston inside the p/s pump gets stuck, the pump will spin properly without any noise but there will be no power steering. Tap the pump lightly below the pressure line fitting and see if it gets better.

just an FYI: Your direction is correct, but there are no piston(s) in the vw ps pump. It is a centrifugal vane pump. The vanes (blades) can get stuck though and some times tapping the pump while it is running can free a stuck vane(s). They need to be able to float freely in their slots to slide in and out and keep in contact with the pumps eccentric shaped wall as they rotate.

Sorry, my terminology may be off. I was refering to the spring loaded valve located in the bore that the pressure fitting screws into.
