Re: (vw mofo)

As ugly (Corolla-like) as it looks I think they gave it a glowing review.

I dunno. I didn't get good overall out of it at all. I got "adequate" out of it.

F the corolla .......... (althou probably a good car) ....its a VW and we should love it for what it is.
I hate the new beetle more than the corolla and i'm a die-hard VW fan.

Re: (brakedust)

I hate the Corolla too...but I do like the new Jetta. It's not my FAVORITE Jetta design of all time, but I do like it.
Not as much as I like the NB, the Golf, or the aircooleds, but still...

Re: (Spirit VW)

Hopefully a lot of people will like it, whether they're VW fans or not. I don't believe that we as enthusiasts can afford to have VW have a failure with its most popular car in the US.
I'm not into it but let's hope its just what someone is looking for.

Re: Review of Jetta 5 in Autoweek (kmead)

Unfortunately, this reviewer counts. Big time.
Hopefully it ends the infinite wasting threads debate on the Jetta's Corolla/Camry exterior cues.
He never said it wouldn't sell.

What part of this concluding sentence gave that impression?

"Once again, it has set the bar for sub-$20,000 luxury, comfort and image."
Regardless we're talking about a base Jetta V here, not the 2.0TFSI version. How would you describe a current 2.0 Jetta IV?

They like the drive, the quality, the ride and handling. The slushbox still sucks the life out of the car.

This may be true, but I think the new car is a full second quicker to 60 mph with the slushbox than the MKIV 2.0 was even with a 5-speed manual transmission.

To be honest Jamie, I couldn't tell you. Believe it or not I've never driven an automatic 2.0 MK4 Jetta. I drove a 5 speed once and it was by no means a speed deamon, but I certainly wouldn't classify it as a slug either.

Re: Review of Jetta 5 in Autoweek (rsbaker)

I would hope so as there is significantly more HP and torque as well as poorer fuel economy.
I was a lukewarm review, but as Jamie points out (rightly) it is the base car and a current 2.0 Jetta slushbox is a real dog.
Clearly a manual will be better and the 2.0t will be an all out scream, or at least we all expect it will be.

Hands down, no questions asked the 2.0T will be the one to get if you can swing it. It simply blows the 1.8T out of the water and has torque characteristics of a 2.8l VR6.
I wish I could take a bunch of people from this forum out for a test drive in the new GTI/GLI.
