Here's where I'm at:
I'm replacing the generator on my Beetle. I have the carb, oil bath breather and all that removed.
The Bently says to lift the fan housing, and in order to do that, I have to remove a bolt from the oil cooler flange and the oil cooler cover. The oil cooler is out my reach...
where is the bolt? Do i need to remove the engine? (the bently said I didn't have to)...
How to I get the generator out?

You definately don't have to remove the engine. What year is your bug? The instructions you are reading are for a doghouse fan shroud, where the oil cooler sits slightly behind the fan shroud on the driver's side. On this setup, the shroud has a 10mm bolt holding it to the oil cooler(located on the back)...but if you have a single port engine, the oil cooler is completely inside the shroud and there is no bolt. Just undo the gen strap and the 10mm bolt on the side(holding the shroud on the cylinder) and you should be good to go. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Generator replacement question (DubberNix)

mine is a 74 with a 72 engine in it. dual port. I'll check it out... and get back. This is the most I've ever done in repairs to any car!

by "back," do you mean back like in the John Muir book - back is what faces me, or back like behind the fan shroud?

All I had to do was remove the strap, remoce the screws that hold the backing plate to the fan shrowd and wiggle it out. Then you have the big bastard nut on the back of the fan. Too easy. you should have to jack with the fan shrowd.

Yah, I don't know what that means either. By "back" I meant the front of the car...between the fan shroud and the firewall. Most people don't bother putting that bolt back in, so you might want to try lifting the shroud once you get the gen strap off.
Good luck - http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Generator replacement question (DubberNix)

I already tried that... the bolt is in. I think I've found it, but i've been too busy the last couple of days to go out and try to finish. Homework, moving ... work.
Hopefully this week..
thanks for the help. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
