i'm new to Jettas - Vag Com is that a scanner. And what computer is in the car OBDI or OBDII? Thanks for the info.

Yup, and a 1994 would be OBDI.
If the car runs fine, who cares about the CEL?
You'll learn that soon enough here

Thats just it the car runs fine when the CEL isnt on. When it comes on the car runs ruff- does not accelerate, kinda stumbles. The Vag Com scanner is that something that any mech can do or I have to go to VW.

Had a similar problem with the check engine light on my 96 Jetta (also OBD I). Ended up being an internal fault in my distributor. Problem usually happened when accelerating on highway on ramps at around 50 mph. You should definitely get it scanned though - especially since the distributor is kind of expensive (about $250 US).

Well, he has a 94, so he is OBD1 but may not have the obd2 style connector located above and to the right of the ashtray, behing the sliding panel. He may have the two data plug ports, which I'm not sure where they are located & my Bent is in the garage. In either case, since he is obd1 he doesn't necessarily need a vag-com, he can probably blink the codes in his driveway with a paperclip or a piece of wire. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Just checked my Bentley, it says that the OBD II style of connector (the one beside the ashtray) began in 94 even though it was still using OBD I technology. Either way, before 94, the connectors are just above the ashtray behind the blank switch panels. They also mention some cars have the blinking tool (for the OBD II style plug) stored under the rear seat.

early 94 have a black and white plugs under just below the heat controls
late 94 and on have a cover over a 16 pin socket..
pin#1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8---top row
9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16---lower row

procedure: with ignition on
early 94: with bent paper clip stick into bottom hole of black connector and into bottom hole of white connector
late 94 and on stick clip into #4 and #15
..connect pins for 2.5 seconds then remove jumper wire
Quoting from the manual:
after 1 blink of the MIL light, the first 4 digit DTC will be displayed. Apprx 1 second later, then MIL will blink the first digit, pause, blink the second digit, then pause, blink the third, pause, blink the fourth.
Once the DTC has been displayed, reconnect jumper wire for 2.5 seconds and then remove it..the second code(if present) will be displayed
repeat until no new codes are displayed
as indicated by 4 4 4 4 (four long blinks)
To erase DTC memory:
1)ignition off, connect jumper wire
2)turn ignition on at least 5 seconds then remove jumper wire
3)reconnect jumper wire for 2.5 secs then remove it
first code is displayed
4)repeat #3 until no more codes displayed(only long 4 4 4 4)
5)reconnect the jumper for 2.5 secs and remove it and turn ignition off
note: to confirm codes have been cleared repeat step #3..4 long blinks

an example of a code 2113...camshaft position sensor

I know this reads to be very confusing but follow steps exactly keeping in mind if ignition is on or off

THats good info...one thing that always confuses me though is does "with ignition on" mean with the car running or just turn the key the farthest it will go without starting?
Also, did a few cars have the obd 1 plugs in the center console near the handbrake? Does this sound right and which models would that be in?

Ignition on...means dash lights on but engine not running
