Re: Need Help!!! CEL gonna sell this piece of #&@% (reflexbug)

Ed52 thanks for the detailed info. I would try it but i still cant find the damn access port. looked beside the ash tray and theirs a cig lighter port. Above the ash tray i found a couple of blank out caps next to the switches /def/ ac etc. popped those out did not find any access plug!!! Should it be in plain sight or do i have to dig around inthose holes? Thanks everyone for info. I'm not giving up

Ignition on...means dash lights on but engine not running

Thats what I thought...funny my car wont blink codes unless its running...???....I think I have to have the ignition on but not running to wipe the ecu..I got it to work when the cel came on a while back....

Had a similar problem with the check engine light on my 96 Jetta (also OBD I). Ended up being an internal fault in my distributor. Problem usually happened when accelerating on highway on ramps at around 50 mph. You should definitely get it scanned though - especially since the distributor is kind of expensive (about $250 US).

Internal fault in distributor= Hall (Cam position) Sensor.
The symptoms you have described point to a defective Hall sender.
(Code: 2113)
A new distributor is expensive. You can replace the Hall seperately, though. About $50.00 from online vendors (partsbin.com, etc.).
The dealer won't sell the Hall seperately.
It is a little labor intensive to do, but much cheaper. You might as well change your cap/rotor while you're in there. Still cheaper than whole new distributor.
If you need Hall replacement DIY, let me know. I've posted it before, and should be able to find it for you.
Good luck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

The easiest way to get to the port is to remove the ashtray and then slide the blank above the cigarette lighter to the left.

Yes agian. I have a 94 and it was there just like on my 96, 98 and my friends 95...just like the Bentley says. You must be thinking of the 93.

I have a 95 2.0 and the port IS located right above the cig lighter.
BTW- any further update on the actual problem that started this thread?
(Hall?)

more info? does the CEL coincide with wet weather? i was getting a CEL in heavy rain and immediately after car washes. car would misfire and stutter...generally run like crap until it dried out. if the ECU no longer spits out the code after a few start-ups, the CEL will turn off. it seems the ignition system in our cars is prone to moisture problems. i started with the cap/rotor...sure enough, pulled the old cap and there was some corrosion around the edge, which leads me to believe water was getting in there. replaced the cap/rotor/plugs/wires and haven't had a CEL since. (knock on wood....)
oh yeah...and it's just my general opinion, but i think the CEL on our cars is just hyper-sensitive. i guess that's a good thing, but it seems just about anything can set it off...often the problem is very minor.
